The encyclopedia objectively details the historical and political factors behind such controversial topics as refugees, the West Bank, and terrorism. Coverage concentrates primarily on the modern era, from the late Ottoman period to the present; the ancient and medieval history of the region is also explored.

Led by Philip Mattar, executive director of the Institute for Palestine Studies, a distinguished group of fifty scholars and regional experts has contributed the book's 320 alphabetically arranged articles.
