Flipkart Official Review

“English Bites! My ‘Fullproof’ English Learning Formula” by Manish Gupta as the title suggests is about English as a language and somewhat about how to master it for students and the like. So the book is about how to work on fluency, vocabulary and some tips with reference to written English. That in its truest form so to say is the summary or the gist of the book. To a large extent, the hilarious take on the language works for the book. Manish knows how to write and the language is simple and breezy. The examples with the words also are not difficult to understand and that is quite commendable when you set off writing a book of this nature.

What do not work are the footnotes at every page. They almost do anything for my reading experience, but we also understand the need for them in this kind of a book. The book promises that you learn close to 1000 new words and rightly so. Having said all of this, this book is only recommend o people who want to know more about how to master the language for whatever academic purposes. As a read, it is fun in places and in others it is mostly average.

English Bites!: My Fullproof English Learning Formula is a guidebook to help readers master the English language. This book is filled with autobiographical experiences, footnotes, funny anecdotes, and a range of new words and their usage.

Summary Of The Book

English Bites!: My Fullproof English Learning Formula, published in 2012, has been designed to help readers overcome language barriers, and to learn fluent English. The author speaks about his own experiences, and explains how he used to be a tongue-tied schoolboy. However, over time he developed his foothold over the English language, and finally became a well-versed banker. This book has a autobiographical feel to it, as it is filled with humorous stories of Gupta’s experiences and misadventures with the Queen’s language.

The author promises that readers of English Bites!: My Fullproof English Learning Formula will be able to inculcate more than a thousand new words in their vocabulary through easy and effective techniques. The differences between similar sounding words are also explained, in addition to descriptions about when and where to use them. Delightful incidences have been incorporated to showcase how terms can have different meanings in different situations. Furthermore, meanings of new words are mentioned at the footer of each page. In addition to this, English Bites!: My Fullproof English Learning Formula also contains trivia which ranges from B-school jargon to origin of words to brand names, and more. This guidebook is not a traditional self-help book. Jokes, anecdotes, and funny illustrations keep the reader’s interest in place, and makes learning fun.

This book can be used by candidates of CAT/GRE/XAT/GMAT, those who wish to develop a better command over English, and any language enthusiast. English Bites!: My Fullproof English Learning Formula, the author’s debut work, is the perfect guide to improve one’s verbal abilities.

An inspiring read

Manish Gupta is an honest, forthright and gregarious banker who has labored over the book for close to two decades. And he doesn't disappoint. The text is anecdotal and racy and words along with some interesting trivia keep popping out as you flip through the book. Read it not just to improve your word power or ken, but also as a work that reflects the predicament of an average Indian student for whom learning the nuances of English language is as important as scoring well in academics, and how it can become a process of joyful self learning as Manish, a glib talker now, discovered

HAVE A BITE, TASTE THE DIFFERENCE!!!

Before reading this book, it would be good if one has a fair idea as to what this book is all about. Certainly, it is not a book that you can pick on a lazy Sunday, whereas if you are a non-native speaker of English and you look forward to having that polished edge that differentiates a good speaker and an average speaker, then look no further!

Being a guy who is born and brought up in Trivandrum, I can identify myself with Manish in the book as the narrative is quite autobiographical. Manish is magnanimous in placing himself in the narrative, mostly at the receiving end of things. His sel...

His self-deprecating style is something that I latch on.

What makes this book different from other books that help you better your command over the language is here you gain new words and wisdom in an anecdotal way instead of the pedagogical style where we start a book with sincerity and after going through some pages we keep it aside and the book will start gaining dust.

It put a smile on my face when I read Manish also stumbled upon ???Word Power Made Easy??? by Norman Lewis. Kind of rigourous research that is being done to come up with such a gripping book that intertwines words and worldly knowledge is unfathomable. There is an undertone of humour throughout the book that keeps the interest of the reader alive right till the last page.

Interesting trivia on how finest coffee is being made, travails of a sperm, infidelity and, to crown it all, Red and White wine are something that linger in my mind even after finishing the book. The book instills a sense of confidence in the mind of a reader to speak the Queen???s English with aplomb

Thank you Manish for giving me such a long time to review your book. It seems you also somewhere understood that I am not just going through pages to write a review, instead I am wholeheartedly reading it and making your book dog-eared. I could not agree more when Manish said ???even after spending last twenty years as a humble servant of the English language, I frequently get stumped by new revelations???

My only request to Manish is please come up with a book on idioms and phrases in English that would help a vernacular speaker the same way ???English Bites??? does.

I go with a whopping 4.5/5 for Manish Gupta's "English Bites" - have a bite, taste the difference!

Over all the book is well written and quite detailed.

There are scores of books written on learning the English language and I???ve read my fair share over the years but English Bites! is the first book I???ve read that talks about someone???s journey in learning English while still teaching me a lot about it. Manish Gupta takes us down the path he followed starting out in an English medium school as he tried to wrap his mind around the English language gaining a proficiency that finally resulted in a book. The book covers not only words but also tips and tricks that help learn and remember words and usage.

The book is laid out well with meanings of words either explained in the text or as foot notes. Gupta has also included illustrations and expansions that help understand concepts better.

Over all the book is well written and quite detailed. English Bites! will definitely help anyone who wants to get better in English no matter whether it???s just casual interest or a study for exams, however it will take a few reads before you make a dent in your English vocabulary. This book is going to permanently reside on my ???pot reading shelf???. :D

Worthy of the bucks...

You are making a major folly considering this book an academic book. It is way more fun than that.

The book surely will add over 1000 words to your vocabulary, but I doubt its uses in our daily life. Come on, who uses difficult words instead of easy ones to deliver one's emotions. On the other hand, the same difficult words improves one's English and their confidence, enabling them to face larger audiences.

I have to agree that, at times, it gets a way monotonous. The read becomes laborious to continue, but the interesting anecdotes, the brief depths of the actual English language, was on...

On the whole, the book delivers what it promises to serve...

An excellent book!

As some wise man had quipped - It is better to learn from others mistakes than from your own. Manish Gupta through his English Bites not only explains the meaning of 'faux pas' but also lists down several of the ones that he seems to have committed. It is these tales that make the book an interesting read. A great treasure for the ones who feel challenged with English and a refresher for those who think they know (you are sure to learn something new).
Some people tend to get bogged down by the numerous (and helpful) footnotes. They can do well to enjoy the book looking down for reference...

Exaggeration

if you're seriously looking to increase your word power, then this book is definitely not for you. Author has mistakenly put wrong title for his auto-biography. However, t could be a good read but not for what title is intended for. (View complete review)
