The English Patient (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.350

Set in 1945, The English Patient explores the lives of four very disparate war torn people, a young woman and three men, who take refuge in a damaged villa north of Florence as the war retreats around them. In an upstairs room lies the badly burned English patient, alive but unable to move. His extraordinary adventures and turbulent love affair in the North African desert before the war provide the focus around which the vivid tales of his companions revolve. His very presence will forever change the destiny of those around him.

Magnificent!

I love how Ondaatje ends each chapter with an event but with a recollection or a memory. Passionate like the ocean on a particularly stormy night, intricate like an immaculately woven mughal motif, this is one book I couldnt put down. I have read it thrice and I have been held spell bound by Ondaatje???s tale of love and wistful longing, revealed through the memories of a completely burnt, nameless, faceless man who is called the English patient, because he only knows English.

Set in post-war Italy, The English Patient focuses on four survivors coming to terms with the aftermath of war. The Sri Lankan born Canadian novelist Michael Ondaatje writes sparely but beautifully. Fun fact: In 1992, the Booker Prize was divided between two books: Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient and Barry Unsworth's Sacred Hunger. I havent read Scared Hunger but am very interested in checking out the competition.

Excellence in narration

The author is quite high on sensitive quotient and it reflects in his empathy to multiple characters. Got hold of this book after seeing the movie and this one doesn't disappoint either. There is a highly poetic quality in ideas and flow of the story, though it is non-linear. Valuable addition to any collection. Really 5 star...

worth a read

You will be spellbound by this book. The English Patient is one of those classic books that deserve to be on book-shelf of all readers. This book has a complex structure however the author holds you through the plot following the successes and the misgivings of his characters.

A love story at the back drop of World War II

Emotion, Romance , Confusion, Love, Hate, Deceit, Nationalism, War, Death, Destruction, Country, Pride, Service, Red Cross...all weaved together into a thick layered plot.
Either watch the movie by same name or read this book.
