Margaret Ammons, mother of three and nearing 40 years old, is neither as uninteresting nor as mousy as her twenty-year marriage to Jerry has made her feel. It's Jerry's workaholic nature and attraction to younger women that have driven Margaret to live her life through her children. When she flies back to her hometown to attend the funeral of a long-time family friend, she discovers that Ron Crenshaw, whom she always regretted jilting for Jerry many years before, has been holding her closely in his heart. Their strong feelings for each other are rekindled, and the past becomes more real than the present. Margaret struggles to make right a relationship she knows is wrong, always hoping that one day she and Ron will be together.
