First published in 1984, What To Expect When You Are Expecting still continues to be one of the premier guides that expectant mothers read during pregnancy.
The book provides information on the many different aspects of pregnancy, right up to the birth of the child. Starting with the time when a woman suspects that she might be pregnant, the book covers every month of the nine-month pregnancy period. One chapter is devoted to each month and each chapter begins with a list of changes in the body and physical and emotional symptoms that the pregnant woman may be experiencing.
The new edition contains updated information on diet, nutrition, and care. It also includes photos of the developing fetus in each stage of pregnancy. It also covers new medical developments and lifestyle trends that pregnant women can follow.
The book provides updated advice on how to make life better at the workplace and at home for the mom-to-be, how to deal with the various physical and emotional changes, nutritional and dietary tips, as well as advice and tips for the expectant father.
About The Author
Heidi Murkoff was inspired to write the book for expectant mothers through her own experience. During her first pregnancy, she could not find much information on what to expect during the nine months and how to deal with the various changes that pregnancy entails.
With the success of the book, What To Expect When You Are Expecting, she was inspired to write a series of What To Expect books, including What To Expect: The First Year and What To Eat When You Are Expecting.
Sharon Mazel has co-authored the What to Expect series with Heidi Murkoff. She has worked as a writer and news producer with various television networks like Fox, WPIX, and NMC.
The books she has co-written with Heidi Murkoff Include What To Eat When You Are Expecting, What To Expect Before You Rare Expecting, and What To Expect The Second Year: From 12 to 24 Months.
Mazel has a Masters Degree in Journalism from Columbia University. She is also a writer and consulting editor at WhatToExpect.com. Her articles have been published in Parenting Magazine, The Washington Post, and BabyTalk Magazine.

I'm a Childbirth Educator. From that point of view, this book is just plain waste of money. There are plenty of other INTELLIGENT books that a pregnant woman SHOULD read. This one is very superficial, it gives you a sweet rosy picture of childbirth and doesn't really prepare you. How do I know? Because I read it from cover to cover and gained very little. Luckily for me, i didn't buy it, someone lent it to me. But now that i have read other better books, this one seems like an M&B compared to the others. I personally don't think that women should have a rosy picture but the real picture. Medically speaking, this book contains very little in explaining what really happens with giving birth and how to manage pain. Most importantly, it DOES NOT talk about how doctors fidget with your body and interfere, making it difficult to have a normal birth. They always push for a C-section by scaring women. This book doesn't talk about it. It is a very Western viewpoint of everything. Doesn't have the Indian context. I could recommend better reading material.
Beware: This book has a high negative score in other sites like amazon and goodreads. Read it before making a decision.
Apparently it speaks in too much detail and elaborately highlights rare complications which will lead to unwanted tension and paranoia.
Hi,
My wife is in her first month and I wanted to gift her a book on pregnancy that is when I bumped into "What To Expect When You're Expecting". Initially I was reluctant in buying this book after reading all negative reviews on Amazon. But I followed by gut feeling and when the book reached me "Bingo". Its like a bible for all the new mum's n dad's. It is a must book. Its a bank of information during pregnancy, answers all you questions.
I would suggest if you don't like something in this book just ignore it and take only what you need or feel good :)
As usual flipkart rocks it shipped my book in 24hrs and my wife is a big time fan of this book.
It is what we were looking for. This is ideal for first timers. This is a very good book and it was recommended by a close friend. We are in our sixth months and its really exciting for my wife as this book gives us a month by month detailed information on what is happening inside with the baby and the mother.
Thanks to Flipkart for the service which reached my friend as a gift.
About the book, read the reviews and gifted this to my friend who is on the way to family. This book describes each and every month of the 10 month pregnancy.
What will happen, how to react and such information makes this book a special one during the Pregnancy.
My friend liked the gift a lot and she confirms that it is very useful as a lecture every month.
So, I recommend this book.
This book served as bible for me during my pregnancy. Strongly recommend the same to all. The presentation is very interesting...
