Not so The hiding of his power was, to borrow an excellent Puritan phrase, the mysterious constraint of Love Divine. James M. Sherwood, in his Memoirs of Revd. David Brainerd, 1891, stated with discernment Brainerds deep sense of personal unworthiness, entire dependence on Divine Grace, caused him to strive after personal holiness and holy service with an intensity that seems superhuman. Thus Brainerds hours in prayer were a result only just as were his striving after holiness and devotion to holy service. The cause was the mysterious constraint of LoveDivine For the love of Christ constraineth us, that we should not henceforth live unto ourselves, but unto Him which died for us and rose again.
