  • Description

The coasts of India have two very popular things in common: fish and fishing. Both are very crucial to the people of the coast and have even found their place in culture, food, sport, society, history and commerce. To separate the coast from fish and fishing is unimaginable as they go hand in hand. Following Fish is a book that calls out to the lovers of the sea and discusses the rich resources that it has provided us.

    Summary of the Book

The book is a collection of nine essays that sum up the author’s rich journalistic investigations on the benefits and impact of the coastal areas. Fishermen have contributed to economy, health and society in many ways. Some of them are: the famous fish treatment for asthmatic patients, the preparation and process of eating West Bengal’s hilsa, the ancient art of building fishing boats in Gujarat, the delicious cuisine and toddy shops of Kerala, the food and lives of the people who first came to Mumbai, the interesting history of the age old Catholic fishing community in Tamil Nadu, and the hunt for the fastest fish near Goa. During his travels, Subramanian has seen how Indian coastal societies have accepted and been influenced by cosmopolitan and modern qualities. He has observed as fishermen have left their traditional duties and turned the craft of fishing into something that is only done for business. He has also noticed the deteriorating condition of the waters and beaches due to excessive fishing. This book is about adventure and discovery as much as it is about nostalgia and loss.

    A brilliant travel book

There is now no dearth of Indian writers writing in English (Chetan Bhagat, sadly, comes to mind immediately), but very few who write as beautifully as Samanth Subramanian. I found "Following Fish" a delight to read and simply could not put it down. His eye for details, his way with words, his excellent sense of humour, his very good command of the English language make this book highly readable. His writing has a simplicity and fluidity that bears comparison with R.K. Narayanan. I've read t...

    A good Indian Travel Book

Insightful travels across the coastal regions of India, full of interesting encounters, delicious fishes and the struggles of the fisher folk of India.

Full of tit bits and trivia about a lot of places. Have to try some of the dishes mentioned. (It is not a book about food though).

The author is apt in his descriptions, neither too grand nor too pragmatic. It is very refreshing to read about Indian places from an Indian author.

Following Fish from kolkatta to Gujrat

A very nice travelogue around the indian coast line and very well written. The journey starts from Kolkatta to Gujrat through Orissa,Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Bombay and Goa.

It not only captures the lifestyle of the people living in the coastal regions but also the history, culture, recipes and tradition associated with them.

It also touch upon the current situation of the fish business and degradation of fish (size,no. and quality) due to accessive fishing by the greedy fishermen and o...

    Don't expect Indian fish recipes

This is a travelogue and not a recipe book. I think the writer has done a great job in presenting the distinctive taste, aroma and flavour of every coastal place with beautiful drama. Its a great read if you want to hear stories of the most quaint places along the Indian coastline.

    Nine essays...

Nine essays of travels around the Indian coast.

Samanth's writing is so easy to read, that I am really happy to have picked up this book, recommended to me as it was by a senior colleague who loves his fish.

His essays covers the western coast of India in 6 of the 9 essays. Personally, I would have loved to have read more of the experiences from the eastern coast too... from places like Machilipatanam, etched into my 12 year old mind because of a devastating cyclone in 1977, of how they de...

    Fantastic read!

This is a wonderful romp through fish country for all lovers of the piscine cuisine. The essays are insightful, witty and full of an enthusiasm that will infect even non fish eaters. The author travels around India's long coastline, visiting fishing communities and tasting their dishes. Samanth Subramanian's book is informative and a great example of writing that combines the best of food and travel.

    Readable

I found the description of the book as "A stunning debut by a hugely gifted writer" by Ramachandra Guha (on the cover) an exaggeration. It is readable, and that is all. The humour appears forced and the literary allusions often unnecessary. The writer is probably a scholar, but I do not feel that much learning is needed for this type of book.
