France, Germany And The European Union; Maastricht And After

European integration has been built around the post-war Franco-German reconcilliation. Ever since France and Germany began to play a crucial role in the European Union (EU), no major initiative has been possible without their cooperation. It is not the congruence of their interests but a determination to accomodate divergent positions that has enabled the European integration process to remain on the track.
