Unconventional but interesting

“What is the similarity between real-estate agents and sumo wrestlers”; “Why do drug dealers still live with their mothers”; “What is the similarity between the KuKluxKlan and the crack agents” – these questions sound intriguing, don’t they?

Levitt, a renowned (and rather unconventional) economist, in this book, has tried to unravel all these and many more mysteries through economic tools. He relies more on proven data rather than on people’s opinion. In the book he presents some truly incredulous facts. Who would have thought that the dip in the crime rate in the 90’s in the US was mainly due to legalized abortion rather than innovative police strategies? Similarly, the crack dealing business isn’t as lucrative as it seems from outside. Most crack dealers only make like 3.5$ per hour. The author has accentuated the importance of incentives, information asymmetry, and conventional wisdom throughout the text.

Language is extremely lucid and the writing style of Dubner grips the reader to the book. An awesome read!

Is this Callled a fake marketing ??

This might be my 10th purchase from flipkart or even more.

The delivery is superb with perfect packing and up to date tracking info.

No complaints on Flipkart Till date.

I never used to check the bills, but this time i happened to see that the bill is priced Rs 9/- higher than the Price on the book.

I can take lite for this as its just Rs. 9/-, but what can this be called!! A Fake discount or Fake marketing!

I request the Flipkart team to address this, and Please do not say me that the Item is billed wrong by mistake.
'
Thanks.

Good reading

I really liked it. But I am a student of economics and see the inter connections between various things myself.

For other it might look like bunch of oped columns put together to tell the author's findings and conclusions of his academic research.

Some of his methodologies are not as novel, but clearly credit should go to his observation skills.

I liked the part when he said entering your own data gives you a better understanding of data. It is partly true, but as an auditor, I find that if you spend enough time with any data you will find the patterns you do not actually have to enter the data yourself.

Da Vinci Code of Economics

I do not want to go into a lot of details of the book, I know I will not be able to do justice to that. So all I want to say is that if Dan Brown has made you come to the edge of your seats with his high drama, close to reality thriller, Steven and Stephen have done something very similar with Freakonomics. An economic thriller, every chapter has got the resonance of brilliance and it will not take very long before this particular book becomes as thrilling as any fictional book. A must read for everyone who understand and are interested to know about stuff that is out of the box. This read will be difficult for ppl whose understanding of basic economics is shaky like incentives, demand supply etc..

Must read - for everyone - more if you are a manager

Utility. Utility. Utility. Utility.
Before there was shoddy talking, and then
Von Neumann and Morgenstern gave it to the community - and from then there was Utility.
Freakonomics explores the depth and breadth of the notion of it -- thereby making everydays life explicable in terms of them.... the tenet : " People responds to incentive" - and that is what Utility is - in layman terms.
This exploration is fascinating - a must read for anyone.
