Freakonomics (A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything) Price: Rs.101

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool?
What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?
How much do parents really matter?

These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing.

Unconventional but interesting

“What is the similarity between real-estate agents and sumo wrestlers”; “Why do drug dealers still live with their mothers”; “What is the similarity between the KuKluxKlan and the crack agents” – these questions sound intriguing, don’t they?

Levitt, a renowned (and rather unconventional) economist, in this book, has tried to unravel all these and many more mysteries through economic tools. He relies more on proven data rather than on people’s opinion. In the book he presents some truly incredulous facts. Who would have thought that the dip in the crime rate in the 90’s...

Levitt, a renowned (and rather unconventional) economist, in this book, has tried to unravel all these and many more mysteries through economic tools. He relies more on proven data rather than on people’s opinion. In the book he presents some truly incredulous facts. Who would have thought that the dip in the crime rate in the 90’s in the US was mainly due to legalized abortion rather than innovative police strategies? Similarly, the crack dealing business isn’t as lucrative as it seems from outside. Most crack dealers only make like 3.5$ per hour. The author has accentuated the importance of incentives, information asymmetry, and conventional wisdom throughout the text.

Language is extremely lucid and the writing style of Dubner grips the reader to the book. An awesome read!

Simply Superb!

Its an amazing book. Never thought of mundane things around me with such different perspective. This is a book which will make you start thinking differently. One must go for it if at all you are interested in economics and want to look at it in completely weird yet interesting way. Couldn't keep the book down until the last page.

Go for it!

Facts from numbers

Astonishing facts gleaned from scientific mining of numbers and data. Freakonomics shows how easily correlation can be mistaken for causes and how to dig out hidden truths. Well written and is centered around interesting case studies.
