In A Free State: The Novel, an award-winning novel by V.S. Naipaul, tells the story of expatriates from Britain who find that the land that once set them free has now turned hostile.

Summary Of The Book

In A Free State: The Novel is a novel within a novel, i.e., it is one of the five works that make up In A Free State, an award-winning novel by V. S. Naipaul.

The story is set in an East African state that has recently achieved independence. The dethroned monarch has fled, and the President is all set to take over the reins of the state. Amidst these developments, the country is witnessing endless violence in urban as well as rural areas, all in the name of the Civil war.

When the crisis is at its peak, two English civilians, Bobby and Linda are returning to the safety of their government’s colony. Their road trip is fraught with danger as they discover shocking things about themselves, about each other, and about the newly-formed state.

The two of them stop at a hotel for dinner where they witness a heated altercation between an old Colonel and his servant. Moreover, the young driver turns abusive when he finds some minor damage in his car.

Both these events that exhibit the arrogance of the white men incur the wrath of the servants. Given their newly found freedom, the long-suppressed anger of the servants rises to the fore. Responding to atrocities and humiliations heaped upon them in the past, they mete out the same abusive treatment to the white travelers.

Through Bobby and Linda’s road trip, the book reveals how the tables have turned. It shows the transition of a haven into something dangerous and hostile. Through the display of man’s greed, his cruelty against one of his own, and his cold, calculating behavior, the book makes the readers question the very existence of freedom.

In A Free State was published in its entirety in 1971, and it won the Booker Prize that year. This particular edition is a 2008 reprint and contains only one of the five works from the original novel.

In a Free State : The Novel

It is no doubt one of the best masterpiece from the pens of V.S. Naipaul. Very oppulent & sombre. Carefull in choice of words. The English I will prefer to call the "Language of a Emancipated Mind".
When I read the book for the first time I contemplated to be very grandiloquent in the vocabs but rather the use of rusty words and day today life make me very easy to understand it.
No doubt, the description of the nature was really splendid & during the reading course I found my self in the middle of the Africa.
I really loved the novel at the first go.
