French Studies In History: The Inheritance - Vol. I A collection of classic essays by French scholars in what has come to be known as New History. A departure was made, almost six decades ago, from the established historiography of the time which focused on the documented achievements and failings of the ruling dynasties. The new history took cognisance of what happened in the lives and minds of ordinary people. The collection includes Bloch’s seminal essay ‘The Advent and Triumph of the Watermill’; papers by leading scholars on trade between Seville and Spanish America; food prices and famine and the history of climate.
