Growing up in a rural East Texas community in the '50s and '60s created an atmosphere conducive to development of the imagination of children, especially those whose uninhibited view of life already attracted their attentions to the unusual. Throw into that mixture a blind boy who refused to consider the possibility that he was in any way handicapped and was always pushing his luck to prove it, and you have the formula for a most unusual childhood. Finally, add a little brother who gladly aided his older sibling in his quest for independence, and the situation explodes into an irreverent crusade to squeeze the last drop of joy out of life.
