Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire (Book - 1) by martin george r. r.|author;-English-HarperCollins Publisher-Paperback_Edition-TV tie-in ed (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.280

Acclaimed as one of the major achievements in the fantasy mystery genre, Game Of Thrones: A Song Of Ice And Fire (Book- 1) TV Tie-in Edition is the first book of George R. R. Martin’s immensely popular series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Summary Of The Book

Full of adventure, mystery, intrigue, and romance, Game Of Thrones: A Song Of Ice And Fire (Book- 1) TV Tie-in Edition is a fitting opening to one of the most popular fantasy fiction series. The book contains supernatural elements which revolve around the seasons which last decades. The summer is ending and winter is fast approaching. As the cold is on its way back, it is bringing along with it deadly forces. Beyond the protective walls of the kingdom, in the frozen wastes, supernatural forces are making their way to the world of men.

In this battle for the throne, replete with death, plunder, tragedy, betrayal, terror, and treachery, two families take centre stage, the Starks and the Lannisters. Lord Eddard Stark, the newly appointed ‘Hand’ of King Robert, has to defend the Iron throne. What happens to King Robert? What does Ned Stark discover that makes him the enemy of the Queen? Will Sansa Stark marry Joffrey? Who is Daenerys Targaryen and how will her actions affect Westeros? This fantasy adventure tale, which takes place in a land of magic, dragons, and supernatural creatures, keeps readers spellbound till the very end.

Published in 1996, Game Of Thrones: A Song Of Ice And Fire (Book- 1) TV Tie-in Edition became a New York Times bestseller. The novel received the Locus Award, the Hugo Award, and the Ignotus Award. It was also nominated for the World Fantasy Award and the Nebula Award. The series was adapted into an HBO television series, which premiered in 2011.

About George R. R. Martin

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1948, George Martin had started writing as a young boy. Martin did his BS and then his MS in journalism from Northwestern University, Illinois. After the failure of his novel, The Armageddon Rag, Martin embarked on a television career. ~The Best Book for Fantasy Fiction Fans~

The best book in the fantasy fiction genre.

I found it really simple to read not as tough as LOTR ...or The Wheel of Time! The plot, the theme or call it the storyline ~> you will be surprised. A definite page turner with lots of twists and turns ... I'm so happy to read it first and then watched the HBO 10 episodes on this one later :) :) :)

Highly recommended to all fantasy fiction fans. I heard the series won couple of awards too...

Now looking forward to read the second part ...

A Game of Awesomeness

Upfront, I must tell you guys that I???m not much of a reader. I only read in my spare time, which mostly includes fiction like sci-fi, fantasy. Although, after reading the book first of the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, I think I???m becoming one quickly. This book is THAT good! It brings out the bibliophile inside. And now I???m a big fan of the franchise, having watched the inspired HBO TV series.

Although, after reading the book first of the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, I think I???m becoming one quickly. This book is THAT good! It brings out the bibliophile inside. And now I???m a big fan of the franchise, having watched the inspired HBO TV series.

The plot involves three main story-lines which are interconnected to each other. Martin introduces a fictional continent called Westeros (and it???s seven kingdoms) in a fictional world where only three continents exist or are known & mapped, others being Essos and Sothoros. Story is told by view point of some major characters.

Out of the three main story-lines, one concerns the seven kingdoms which are ruled by a king named Robert Baratheon who overthrew House Targaryen fifteen years before the events of the book with the help of his friend Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn, the man who fostered both. Second main story-line involves the events of the Wall ??? a massive construction situated north of the Westeros which prevents the dark forces that lie beyond-the-wall from entering the realm and a military order created to hold it called Night Watch. The writer clearly draws inspiration from Medieval Europe and War Of The Roses. The final main story-line concerns the remnants of House Targaryen ??? a young exiled prince and his 13 years old sister who her brother barters to a mighty savage house-lord hoping he and his army will help him take the Seven Kingdoms back from Robert Baratheon who they understandably call the Usurper.

Writing of the book is very vivid and take my word, it???s really hard to put the book down once you???ve started reading. The world Martin has created is rich, immersive and has very diverse characters, few you???ll love, few you???ll hate and on few you???ll be undecided. There is just the right amount of humor to keep the interest going if things get a bit too serious. I never really got bored, the language never feels insipid.

Funny, witty and inspirational dialogues, amazing character depth, engaging story-line and grey characters contrary to the usual black and white of other fictional writings makes this a must. Well, if you love reading fiction even a bit, just get it.

The Modern Genius

Being a Lord of the Rings fan I was very excited about reading the Game of Thrones- given, that maps in books had always been a keen aspect that I looked forward to. The words in this book were so beautiful that one could be as creative as a rock and yet be able to imagine what George Martin wants you to see.
However, I realised that unlike the great Tolkien and his intricate descriptions, George Martin had brought reality into fiction. It was no longer all good against all bad. As you go through the chapters of this brilliant book, you will know every characters point of view. You will...

However, I realised that unlike the great Tolkien and his intricate descriptions, George Martin had brought reality into fiction. It was no longer all good against all bad. As you go through the chapters of this brilliant book, you will know every characters point of view. You will be torn apart in different directions as they are. Their lives will make you happy. Their deaths will make you sad. Sometimes you'll be confused whether you are happy or sad. Sometimes it will surprise you.

George Martin is truly one of the geniuses that our generation is fortunate enough to see. A Song of Ice and Fire could not have been better.

A Game Worth Playing

With characters you begin liking and rooting for as well as those you start detesting immediately, along with a few who do not reveal their true intentions till the end, this book is a definite must have. I have to add that the fantasy is completely peripheral to the main plot and the intriguing characters are what make this book a unique read. It's a fine example where the story is secondary to the characters and the latter drive the former ahead. When you play the game of thrones, you win and begin ordering for the rest of the Song of Ice and Fire series. George R R Martin is the modern day Tolkien, only with an adult twist.

This one takes the Throne in the world of books!

The reason why this book first caught my attention was the HBO TV series based on it, which has a rating of 9.4 on IMDB. Surely, such a highly rated show must be based on a superb book?

I was not mistaken. The book has such a magical quality about it that it absorbs you in completely. The characters are what make the heart and soul of the book - so wonderfully crafted, so lovable (and some, truly despicable). The narration is brilliant - you can feel the creepy terror surround you in the prologue when the "Others" attack a Lord and two soldiers - and from there on, you are drawn...

The narration is brilliant - you can feel the creepy terror surround you in the prologue when the "Others" attack a Lord and two soldiers - and from there on, you are drawn into the world of Winterfell and King's Landing and Vars Dothrak, and all the well-crafted locations of the world of this book.

However, if you want your fantasy to be like Harry Potter - full of witches and wizards and dark lords and spells flying in all directions - this book is not for you. There is very little magic in this book, and you can actually call it a political thriller rather than a fantasy book.

Flipkart's delivery amazed me more than the book. I ordered it on monday evening, and was expecting it around friday, as the site said 'delivered in 3-4 business days', but wham! there it was on wednesday morning!
