Ganesha on the Dashboard (Paperback) Price: Rs.164

Ganesha On The Dashboard provides an honest analytical picture of the lives of millions of Indians ruled simultaneously by technological progress and illogical superstition.

Summary Of The Book

India is fast becoming a global superpower on the fast track to success with its IT Boom and professional human resources. However, no matter how far the nation progresses, superstition still reigns supreme with millions of educated and smart Indians who go out of their way to take the unscientific route to supposed security and harmony. Ganesha On The Dashboard provides an uncompromising picture on this absurd dichotomy.

Ganesha On The Dashboard provides examples of superstitious beliefs and how they are detrimental to progress. The title is derived from the average Indian’s strategy in buying a car. The date and time are carefully chosen so as to be auspicious, good luck traditions such as breaking a coconut are meticulously followed. To add the icing to an already traditionally brimming cake, an idol of Ganesha the protector is placed on the dashboard to ensure that every journey will be a safe one. Meanwhile actual safety precautions such as wearing a seatbelt and driving carefully are conveniently overlooked. After all what harm can come when Ganesha is riding along with you in the car?

Intelligent and highly educated Indians still overlook scientific temper when it comes to superstitions. Homes are remodeled using huge amount of money in keeping with Vastu guidelines for luck and prosperity, females are not even given the chance to be born as the rate of female infanticide continues to grow and if they are allowed to be born they are inevitably given the short shrift as males are the key to the father’s place in heaven.

India may have stepped into the 21st century in terms of technology but definitely not in terms of mindset. Many traditions like intra-gothra marriages, keen adherence to astrology, caste issues and many other such stories are illustrated by way of examples and are critically dissected and laid bare to help readers understand their origins and their current hampering of progress. Ganesha On The Dashboard offers an objective view of the traditions of this complex country.

The title is apt for the subject though a more egalitarian one would have made it more acceptable to non-Hindus especially when a fleeting glance needs to carry enough appeal to sell the book

This is a book that needs to be read by every Indian. While for a large part, the book makes interesting reading, it does get to be meandering and pontificatory in parts. The plethora of examples and anecdotes are very illustrative of the malady and do full justice to the cause espoused in the book. The book would definitely have benefited from some stringent editing. Overall, definitely worth the money spent as well as the effort to read it

Very Relevant Read

I brought the book on my father's request and ended up reading it myself. It starts off asking very interesting questions about our (Indian) day-to-day life and the approach to our common problems. It might not be as interesting a read in terms of literary prowess but certainly makes its point clear. It forces the reader to think about the lack of scientific temper (not to confuse with science, read more of it in the book) , very clearly portraying the facts making it a very strong argument.
I suggest you to get a copy, its worth a read and who knows, could change the way you approach life...

4/5 from my end for line of argument and intention.

Ganesha on the dashboard-The review

Do you always get bugged by "god-men"?
Do you always believe them, thinking that what they do is true?
In the end of the day,do you come home, crying because you got tricked?

Just leave the past, and read Ganesha on the dashboard.
The book talks about religion, and of course, science.
This masterpiece by V.Raghunathan and M.A Eswaran,
is mainly based on why Indians are more on religion than science.
They also checked on how science, a roughly 500 yr-old study made more changes in the modern era than religion, about 5000 yrs old.

Humour combined with scientific rationale...

This book takes the reader on a humorous, yet educational, knowledgeable, and wonderful ride - gradually increasing the scientific and logical thinking and behavioural traits in the reader.
Apart from above, it also educates the reader on a variety of historical topics in a way he/she can apply logic to the problems faced in future.
In a society like India, such thinking is a must. For those who loved the recent movie "OMG Oh My God", this book would be like a cherry on top of the cake...
