Amar Chitra Katha tells the story of the greatest river in India, the holy Ganga, in this comic book for kids of all ages.

    Summary of the Book

Eons ago, a mighty king named Sagara sired 60,000 sons. He held an Ashvamedha challenge and sent a horse forth to declare his right to rule over all the territory it traversed. The God Indra was envious of Sagara’s might and stole the horse, wishing ill-will upon the king. He hid the horse in the netherworld, beside a meditating sage. Sagara’s sons discovered the horse and assumed that the sage was responsible for the horse’s theft. They awoke the sage, who was none other than the divine Kapila. Kapila had been meditating for several thousand years, and upon opening his eyes, he turned all the sons of Sagara to ash. Their souls wandered the mortal realm without peace, for their final rites had not been performed. In the years to come, a descendant of Sagara, the sage Bhagiratha, learnt about his kin’s fates and decided to bring a mighty river down to the Earth from the heavens. He prayed to Brahma and wished for Ganga to cleanse the Earth. In her rage, Ganga sought to destroy the world with her descent, but Bhagiratha sought the help of Shiva to stop her mad rampage. Shiva trapped Ganga in his hair, allowing her only to come out of his embrace in small streams. Thus the Earth was blessed with the holiest river in existence. This Amar Chitra Katha book retells the stories of the mighty Ganga for a whole new generation.
