Geetanjali is a book of poems written by the obel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. This book contains the translated versions of 103 Bengali poems written by the famous poet. It was published originally in the year 1910, in Bengali. The English version of the book was first published in the year 1912. Rabindranath Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, thanks to Geetanjali. The word Geetanjali directly translates to ‘Song Offerings’, and the poems in the book have many metaphysical elements. These poems even refer to a union with the ‘supreme being’. Rabindranath Tagore’s poems reflect his views on life and spirituality, and talk about the mystery, melancholy, and color surrounding everyday life.
Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861. Tagore was a novelist, poet, essayist, writer, playwright, song composer, and painter. He is widely known for changing the face of Bengali and Indian literature and music through his works. Tagore is one of the most esteemed renaissance figures of India and was responsible for putting India on the literary map with his award-winning writing. He was also widely acclaimed as a political, religious, and social thinker and innovator, due to his work through Santiniketan and Viswa-Bharati. His other famous works include The Home and the World, The Post Office, Chokher Bali, Kabuliwala, Gora, The Gardener, and The Last Poem.
