IES - 2013: General English is a book that focuses on functional English and all its nuances that will need to be mastered for those attempting to pass the Indian Engineering Services (IES) examinations.

This book provides detailed explanations regarding the usage of words in various contexts, and seeks to improve the reader’s vocabulary. The book covers a number of topics such as parts of speech, gerunds and syntax, which are essential for anyone to be able to write and speak well-constructed sentences. Then, there are idioms and vocabulary, which will add finesse to the readers’ language. One of the special features of IES - 2013: General English is that it contains detailed information in the Vocabulary section regarding synonyms, antonyms and meanings of words.

The IES examination is held once a year. The written round of the examination will have two sections, one an objective type section and another an essay type. Students will have to choose one engineering discipline from four (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Electronics and Communication). The objective section and essay type together will be marked out of a total of thousand. After this, there is a personal interview round which is essentially a personality test for students who pass the written round. The interview round carries a maximum of two hundred marks.
