Taichung (Native) 1 and IR 8 were introduced into India in mid 1960s. Forth years have passed since then and more than 600 high yielding rice varities have been released in this country. these HYVs have changed the scenario of rice varities in India. Besides, they made a significant contribution to the green revolution in this country. The present book Genetic improvement of Rice Variaties of India has one general chapters, five chaptes dealing with the contribution made by the national Institutes, twentyone chapters dealing with the work done in states and union territories and one chapter about the role of private sector.

Dr. S D Sharma had his post graduate education at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. During his career, he worked at the Central Rice Research Institute, Indian Agricultural research Institute and National bureau of plant genetic resources.
