First published in 1928 as "At Cheltenham Spa," this study is a celebration of this historic spa town at the height of its fashionable splendor. Starting with a brief history from the Roman Conquest up to the accession of George III, it focuses on the late 18th and early 19th centuries, beginning with the visit of King George in 1788. As a spa town it was visited by thousands seeking the solace of its healing waters, but as a pleasure resort it attracted some of the most distinguished and fashionable people of the day, such as Edward Jenner, Mrs. Siddons, Charles James Fox, the Prince Regent, Edmund Kean, Lord Byron, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir Walter Scott, all of whose visits are cataloged here.
