Get To The Top: The Ten Rules For Social Success (Hardcover) Price: Rs.299

When it comes to social connections and being a part of the popular milieu, Suhel Seth is the right guide. A part of the creme-de-la-creme of the social circuit in New Delhi, Seth knows just how to win some friends and go a long way.

This book is divided into four parts and contains 10 rules that its readers can follow in order to be successful. He touches upon some very crucial points. For one, he states that it is not enough to know the affluent crowd and chase them in order to get them to take notice. That’s a weak strategy that will never work.

Seth explains that In order to attract people, one has to first be a person of knowledge. He advises his readers to read, analyse, and form an opinion, and states that being aware of things is important and having an individual perspective of things is primary. Everyone loves a person who knows enough about the world to be able to hold his or her own fort in a debate. It goes to show that the individual is a person of substance and people will flock towards him in search of a good time and some intelligent conversation.

Seth mentions that once this has been established, the going might get tough, because making friends is easier than maintaining them. He advises his readers to maintain friendships even with people that they disagree with. He implores his readers not to judge a person’s character or indulge in gossiping as it fosters negativity and turns people against each other.

Seth states that Googling an important person’s name in order to know them better is ill-advised because it affects natural interaction. Also, he states that one should never seek to turn one’s friends into clients, but should try to strike a friendship with one’s clients. While clients are demanding, friendships thrive on equality and compromise. Making friends out of clients is an exercise that takes serious effort. According to the author, honesty and sincerity at work will go a long way to ensure that even if the partnership dies, the friendship can continue.

With his book, Seth advises his readers on how they can use the qualities of trust, respect, and loyalty to increase their self-worth and also their social influence. Released in 2011, this book was published by Random House India.

Use your Connections

There is a huge market potential for anything which can propel folks up the social ladder - BUT this is a big disappointment for the average middle class reader - while it purports to chart a course by using laws , sub rules etc - in reality its more about using the elevator and leveraging your elite connections if you were privileged enough to be in the upper strata like Seth .

there is lot of name dropping and flaunting personal proximity that it smarts of a "disguised" plug for Seth' personal image and "brand".

if you are looking to get to the top of the social pile the honest way - save your hard earned money - more practical books by Keith Ferrazi et al

Learnt so many social tricks in one day...Thanks Suhel...

Women love men with brains, this is why, Marilyn Monroe married Arthur Miller, the playwright, not some model with biceps.

You have got to have the ability to make people laugh, make them remember you, and yes, you must entertain them.

The key to social success is to have opinion. Opinions are for after hours ,not for office hours. So be professional in Office. Respect othrs opinions.

Like your friends for not who they are, but for what they are.Judge their opinions, but not judge them as people.Judge people humanly; not by their wealth, status, intelligence, or politics.

Don't ever do, what I call, the third party bitching, that is, meet someone and tell them the gossip you've heard about them.

Make friends unconditionally. Defend them out of your emotional attachment, not out of what you will get from that moment.Always praise people behind their back and bitch about or criticize them to their face.Harder you try and impress people, the more they will be unimpressed.

Treat rich people with respect and affection.Don't miss the affection part, even the richer ones love it.The rich are looking for honesty, not agreement.Make friends with the wives and kids too.

Don't ask for favour from your friends, rather try to give them favour.Think about what you can do for them, rather than what they can do for you.Make friends out of clients, not clients out of friends.Work should be merit driven, friendship emotion and values driven.

Always introduce friends to each other. One of the things people will remember you for is your ability to get them to meet interesting like-minded people.

Ask people about themselves. It always works. How is their family? Where they went for vacation?

The ultimate weapon in social interaction is not your cartier watch or gucci shoes, but your pair of ears.

Aim always to make friendship, not contacts.Find people you care for, and who care for you.

While praising people, give proper reason for your praise.Complement people for unusual reason.Praise Vijaya Mallya not for his business acument, he knows it, but for his taste for women.

You never can be everyone's favourite and it's not worth it to try .

Gratitude is an important ingredient of strong character. The more you express it, the better of you will be.

Focus on values, not on valuations.Judge people by what they believe in and how they behave.

Keep your old childhood friends. They are really special...

Nothing good about the book

It is all about me and myself. not much of wisdom. If you know few big people just use them and connect to others. Party hard and get connected is message.

Get to the Top: The Ten Rules for Social Success

Having diverse interests myself, I can relate how it helps in conversing on a variety of topics and overall development as one can talk to a lot more people if you take interest in their hobbies, work etc. and though I already practiced a few, there are always things to learn. Suhel is undoubtedly an erudite person which reflects in this work albeit with narcissistic tendencies but like they say, no one is perfect and look at the genius in them. When putting this into practice, one has to look beyond the conventional wall and this book has lot to offer especially for those who enjoy uncomfortable situations tad bit and are courageous enough to be brutally honest without keeping pretenses.
