Getting Things Done : The Art of Stress-Free Productivity (Paperback) Price: Rs.402

Published in the year 2002, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity is a book that provides the readers with key insights into reducing stress in their lives to accomplish their goals.

Summary Of The Book

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity starts off by telling the readers that their previously used methods for attaining success will not work in these modern times. He explains that basic time management practices may prove futile if certain disruptions occur in an individual’s schedule. Getting Things Done is now a popular time management method drafted out by renowned productivity consultant, David Allen. Also known as GTD, this method is based on the concept of de-cluttering the mind of planned activities, making a note of them externally. Allen then goes on to explain that an individual can now focus on the task they have to complete, rather than worry about recalling them.

Allen’s time management method is based on two principles, control and perspective. Through the course of this book, he provides the readers with a workflow process by which they can effectively finish their tasks and he outlines six “horizons of focus” to do so. Allen tells the readers that it is virtually impossible for them to achieve their goals, if they aren’t able to regulate their day-to-day activities.

He goes on to explain that GTD basically involves keeping a track of information required to complete a specific task. Allen also delves into ‘front-end’ planning, which if deficient, can result in mental roadblocks. Front-end planning simply involves generating a plan in the mind, which can be implemented later, without any major difficulty. He elaborates that the human brain “reminder system” at times does not remind individuals of the things they need to do, thereby, citing the need for external support. Allen goes to explain that an individual’s productivity is directly linked to their ability to relax. He explains that only when an individual’s mind is clear, are they able to achieve stress-free productivity.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity has been greatly appreciated by its readers and several magazines. Several task management tools have incorporated the GTD methodology and some of them include wikidPad, TiddlyWiki, TaskCracker, and Pocket Informant.

Must Buy - Do it with a notebook

I bought this book few weeks ago because of obvious reasons (unable to finish all my tasks u-know-the-drill). After reading 30 pages, i knew i had to try, and what a result it was! Amazing is the word! If you want to become efficient, buy this book; but more importantly, use this book with a notebook (so that you can implement it in your life while reading), and you will see the difference in the way you handle your work and daily life. The methods are simple but very effective. I benefited, for one!

An excellent book badly written

I must say this is one book which you should read if Time management & Execution are your immediate areas of concern. David allen gives practical advice on how to manage & execute our daily life.

The essence of his book can be explained in his own words;

"No matter what the setting, there there are five discrete stages that we go through as we deal with our work. We
1) COLLECT things that command our attention;
2) PROCESS what they mean and what to do about them; and
3) ORGANIZE the results, which we
4) REVIEW as options for what we choose to
5) DO.

Even though it is highly practical advice, it only talks on last aspect of the process of Managing Life - Execution. The Previous two A) Discover; B) Plan are not covered in this book. I would recommend to add study on these two separately.

On the flip side; this book is quite difficult to read simply because its quite badly written. The editing is somewhat poor & many things get repeated in many places.

overall a good buy & highly recommendable.

I don't recommend

I found very difficult to understand. Main theme lies in beginning. Later its explained in detail with diagrams.
I found only these points helpful
-Write down your goals/commitments
-What actions needs be taken to accomplilsh your goals
-If not get done, write the reason & take necessary action to finish it off
-Review it everyday

I don't recommend this, waste of time.
