The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.359

It was a book that created a publishing sensation. Set in the icy background of the Swedish countryside and with a rather unconventional protagonist, the murder mystery cum story of financial intrigue, 'The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo' soon acquired a cult status. The first of what came to be known as the Millennium Trilogy, the book and its sequels were published after the death of the author, Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson.

Summary of the Book

The book begins with the protagonist, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, losing a libel case filed against him by a Swedish industrialist, Wennerstorm. After a short prison term, he goes into exile in the Swedish countryside where he begins to work for billionaire Henrik Vagner.

Vagner is keen for Blomkvist to chronicle his family history. The maverick heroine Lisbeth Salander is truly unusual. A computer genius, the reclusive Salander with her multiple body piercings, dysfunctional family history and asocial tendencies first investigates Blomkvist on Vagner's behalf and then ends up teaming up with him to hunt down a serial killer. The book also delicately traces the burgeoning love affair between Blomkvist and Salander.

General Reception and Other Adaptations

The book was extremely well received in Sweden and other European countries. It won several awards including Anthony Award for Best First Novel, Galaxy British Book Award, the Boeke Prize as well as the Glass Key Award for the Best Crime Novel. The book was soon adapted into movie scripts. Two versions of the book have been released on the big screen. Yellow Bird, a Swedish film company released its version in 2009. The movie was directed by Niels Oplev. The Hollywood version, directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, was released in December 2011.

About Stieg Larsson

Stieg Larsson was a journalist and independent researcher.

Other popular books by the author include:

? The Girl Who Played With Fire

? The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

His Personal Life

When his parents went to work in Stockholm, they left their young son behind with his grandparents. Stieg Larsson thus spent his childhood in the Swedish countryside and this was the inspiration for the setting of the book. Before writing the Millennium Series, Stieg Larsson had written several science fiction books. He worked as a journalist with several publications and had decidedly leftist leanings. He also worked as an independent researcher studying right wing extremism and wrote several works denouncing such movements.

Larsson died on November 9, 2004 of a heart attack. The manuscripts of the Millennium Series were found in his apartment and Larsson had reportedly never tried to get them published. But they did get published and the rest, as they say, is history.

Nothing like anything you've read before!

Being a self-confessed book worm I can assure you that this series of books by the very talented Stieg Larsson is nothing like any other novel you've ever read. The characters simply explode on your face, the story line is gripping, and its the best combination of intrigue, violence, and romance that I bet you will not find in any other novel.
Its really a tragedy that Larsson died even before his books went into print and before he could see what a worldwide phenomenon they've become!
I strongly recommend the books to those out there who would love to get shocked out of their usual fare...

I strongly recommend the books to those out there who would love to get shocked out of their usual fare of drama and romance novels!....also, given the fact that the books have been adapted into movies in 2 languages already gives you even more reason to read them!!!!!....

It Will Haunt You Long After Completing the Novel

After hearing so much about this novel and now that 2 movies have been made on this film, I decided to read this book. The initial 100 pages are really very boring and at one point I felt like throwing the book away.

But once the plot starts developing, then the real excitement begins.I can bet 100 dollars that you would not be able to put the book down from thence onwards. The ending is really superb and you would be awe-stricken in the end because you could not have anticipated such kind of ending. This is thing due to which the novel has gained the desired amount of attention from book...

I haven't read the other 2 novels in the Millennium series but I am really looking forward to it. Once you complete the novel, I am quite sure it will haunt you long after you have completed it. I have now become a huge fan of murder mystery novels

I would have given 5 stars to the noel but giving 4 just because of the boring 100 pages in the beginning.

Interesting plot

I like the characters and the plot. Though I could not get beyond the first few pages quickly and had to start all over again thrice. The third time I had decided that I will read it at any cost. And after I had finished some 60 odd pages (until where I think the novel drags a lot), it suddenly got too interesting and I kept the book down only after I had completed it! All in all a good read, but drags a little in some places.

Overrated, but still quite okay

First of all, if you would take more than a few days to read the first 200 pages, don??t read this book. The first 200 pages is quite boring, and pretty much nothing happens.

The second problem I had with this book is the sheer amount of coffee all the characters drink. At least twice or three times in a chapter there is mention of coffee. There is also a lot of advertising for Apple, which was not something I cared for.

The book after the first 200 pages or so flows quite well. The character dialogue is quite weak however. It seems that people don??t really talk to each other properly,...

The book after the first 200 pages or so flows quite well. The character dialogue is quite weak however. It seems that people don??t really talk to each other properly, just say what is required and no more. Maybe Swedish people are like that, but I doubt.

The mystery element is good, there are some clich??s and things out of place however.

If you want a light, enjoyable read, without much to think about, this is the book for you. If you are however a hardcore mystery fan, you might not enjoy it as much as the other people on here who have rated it 5 stars. Only a classic deserves 5 stars, this is far from one.

The most complicated crime novel series I have ever read

I got this movie from friend but it was in Swedish language, I saw it for 15 minutes and closed it down, didn???t get head or tail of it. After a month I purchased the book and believe me I have never read such an intriguing crime story.

Mikael Blomkvist, publisher of Swedish Magazine, Millennium, has already in deep trouble as he is charged with libel case with Wennerstrom affair. He is sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay hefty damage. This not only affects him personally but to great extent to millennium???s subscription. He deliberates what to do to come out of this garbage and out of nowhere he is been contacted by Henrik Vanger, CEO of Vanger corporation for one interesting assignment to solve the murder mystery of his niece Hariet Vanger who disappeared 36 years ago.

Though terms of contract are favorable to him and if he couldn???t solve murder mystery he will get handsome payment. But Henrik is a shrewd businessman, he has promised Mikael to help him out of Wnenerstrom affair only if he can solve the case.

He takes up the case which was happened 36 years ago, and digs deep into family history of Vanger which has more than 100 relatives spread over four generations. He recruits a skinny, weirdo, computer geek Lisbeth Slander as his assistance in this case. Though she looks like psychopath as per her medical history but she had brain and skills which are way better than any common man. The investigation is like finding a pin in stack of dry grass. Read this for the fun of crime novel you will enjoy it.

And if you are planning to buy this buy all three books. I regretted not buying all three books. Second series ???the girl who played with fire??? had a jaw dropping ending which you can never imagine.

Nice Experience

The story is really good and was quite different and way better than that depicted in the movie. It gets quite boring in the beginning but after part-1, the twists and turns get chilling and will keep your hands glued to the book till the very last page! (View complete review)

A very good, if somewhat complicated crime novel

The book consists of two parts. Michael Blonkvist, a Swedish financial crime reporter is trying to nail down "a gangster in Armani suite" going by the name of Hans-Erik Wennerstorm, who he is confident of guilty of financial crimes, but fails in the court of law, because of inadequate p...
