Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Paperback) Price: Rs.235

Forty years have passed, but the memory of Harriet Vanger still continues to haunt Henrik Vanger, Harriet’s uncle and now retired CEO of Vanger Corporations. As a young girl of 16 years, Harriet mysteriously disappeared off the face of an island where the Vanger family held an estate. At the time of the disappearance, the entire island was inhabited by members of the Vanger clan, and it was temporarily cut off from the mainland due to an accident.

Henrik Vanger sincerely believes that he lost his niece to a cold-blooded murderer, and that too at the hands of someone he considers family. Now, after all these years of a relentless search for answers, he seeks help.

Enter Michael Blomkvist - a struggling financial journalist, and Lisbeth Salander - a tattooed, pierced, 24-year-old anorexic and bisexual loner with a photographic memory. She is a private investigator with excellent hacking skills, but equally poor social skills.

As Blomkvist and Salander begin to dissect the cryptic case one step at a time, they realize that they are in for much more than what they initially bargained for. They find themselves on the trail of a serial killer, and are confounded when the only possible suspect to turn up under their radar is none other than Henrik Vanger himself, the only member old enough to have been around when all the murders took place.

As the case gets darker, the investigators find themselves trapped in a family history that reeks of blood and homicide. As they unravel one secret after the other, they almost risk their safety as they proceed.

At the heart of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo lies Larsson’s utter hatred and loathing for all kinds of violence inflicted upon women. As a teenager, he had helplessly witnessed the gang rape of a teenage girl, and this incident significantly influenced his writings. It is perhaps for this very reason that Lisbeth Salander, the female protagonist, has been portrayed as a symbol of female empowerment.

Published in September 16, 2008, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was an instant success in Sweden and other European countries. In 2009, the book went on to win the Galaxy British Book Awards and the Anthony Award for the best debut novel. Stieg Larsson was awarded the ITV3 Crime Thriller Award for International Author of the Year in 2008, after his death. Hollywood created an adaptation of the novel in December 2011.

Directed by David Fincher, it starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Earlier in 2009, the Swedish film company Yellow Bird created film adaptations of the entire Millennium Series.

About the Author
Born in 1954 in Sweden, Stieg Larsson was a Swedish journalist and writer. Best known for his Millennium Series, which was published after his death, he was also a photographer and a member of the Communist Workers League.

The other two books in the Millennium Series by Larsson are- The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.
Stieg Larsson’s writing style is iconoclastic. His writing is downright brutal, raw, and real. From blood, violence, and crime - the essence of crime novels - he deals with issues that are seldom dealt with in crime novels. Sexual abuse, rape, neo-fascism, sex trafficking, and the abuse of individual rights are all dealt with in this series, making the text heavy yet insightful. With powerful female characters and intense themes, Larsson’s writing opens the readers’ eyes to the existing evils of human society and widespread corruption and injustice.

Larsson founded the Swedish Expo Foundation, which worked to eliminate right wing extremism and the white-power culture amongst youth and in schools. He died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in the year 2004.

It Will Haunt You Long After Completing the Novel

After hearing so much about this novel and now that 2 movies have been made on this film, I decided to read this book. The initial 100 pages are really very boring and at one point I felt like throwing the book away.

But once the plot starts developing, then the real excitement begins.I can bet 100 dollars that you would not be able to put the book down from thence onwards. The ending is really superb and you would be awe-stricken in the end because you could not have anticipated such kind of ending. This is thing due to which the novel has gained the desired amount of attention from book...

I haven't read the other 2 novels in the Millennium series but I am really looking forward to it. Once you complete the novel, I am quite sure it will haunt you long after you have completed it. I have now become a huge fan of murder mystery novels

I would have given 5 stars to the noel but giving 4 just because of the boring 100 pages in the beginning.

Overrated, but still quite okay

First of all, if you would take more than a few days to read the first 200 pages, don´t read this book. The first 200 pages is quite boring, and pretty much nothing happens.

The second problem I had with this book is the sheer amount of coffee all the characters drink. At least twice or three times in a chapter there is mention of coffee. There is also a lot of advertising for Apple, which was not something I cared for.

The book after the first 200 pages or so flows quite well. The character dialogue is quite weak however. It seems that people don´t really talk to each other properly,...

The book after the first 200 pages or so flows quite well. The character dialogue is quite weak however. It seems that people don´t really talk to each other properly, just say what is required and no more. Maybe Swedish people are like that, but I doubt.

The mystery element is good, there are some clichés and things out of place however.

If you want a light, enjoyable read, without much to think about, this is the book for you. If you are however a hardcore mystery fan, you might not enjoy it as much as the other people on here who have rated it 5 stars. Only a classic deserves 5 stars, this is far from one.

The most complicated crime novel series I have ever read

I got this movie from friend but it was in Swedish language, I saw it for 15 minutes and closed it down, didn’t get head or tail of it. After a month I purchased the book and believe me I have never read such an intriguing crime story.

Mikael Blomkvist, publisher of Swedish Magazine, Millennium, has already in deep trouble as he is charged with libel case with Wennerstrom affair. He is sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay hefty damage. This not only affects him personally but to great extent to millennium’s subscription. He deliberates what to do to come out of this garbage and out of nowhere he is been contacted by Henrik Vanger, CEO of Vanger corporation for one interesting assignment to solve the murder mystery of his niece Hariet Vanger who disappeared 36 years ago.

Though terms of contract are favorable to him and if he couldn’t solve murder mystery he will get handsome payment. But Henrik is a shrewd businessman, he has promised Mikael to help him out of Wnenerstrom affair only if he can solve the case.

He takes up the case which was happened 36 years ago, and digs deep into family history of Vanger which has more than 100 relatives spread over four generations. He recruits a skinny, weirdo, computer geek Lisbeth Slander as his assistance in this case. Though she looks like psychopath as per her medical history but she had brain and skills which are way better than any common man. The investigation is like finding a pin in stack of dry grass. Read this for the fun of crime novel you will enjoy it.

And if you are planning to buy this buy all three books. I regretted not buying all three books. Second series “the girl who played with fire” had a jaw dropping ending which you can never imagine.

A very graffic read!

I had very low expectations for this book. It seemed to be too popular, which usually ends up meaning that the book is overhyped, and not remotely as good as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised. it's a deeply weird novel in a lot of ways, not least because it deals with some of the most horrific things one human being can do to another physically and emotionally, and then also takes on financial or corporate crime, and . . . well, again, I don't want to risk giving away the details of the rather intricate plot for those among you who haven't yet taken the plunge.

A bit slow going at the beginning, but I loved Lisbeth Salander so much that, as soon as she arrived, I was hooked. She is easily one of the most enigmatic and interesting characters I've ever read and I found that whenever she was the focus of the narrative I could not put the book down, and of all the characters in the book I found her to be the one I identified with the most ...she was a "perfect victim" who refused to be one.Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. is vulnerable but not defenseless. In the end, the supposedly disaffected and detached Lisbeth was the most human character of all...and one that *could* love.

Many, many early nights were sacrificed for this book. WORTH IT(and yeah, all that technical babble about Swedish business and journalistic hierarchies sailed so far over my head :P)”.

A Must Read Title In Your List

TGWTDT is amongst those awesome books that blew me away when I read it first. Although this was almost a year back but I can still remember. This feeling held on to me despite the fact that I had already seen the movie and knew the suspense. It is not deniable that when someone else's imagination has been already served to you, the book really got to be something to still blow you away with its writing. What I really liked about the book were its parallel narratives and the break neck pace at which it progressed till the end.Coupled to this the issue addressed by it boiled me in congruence... ()

I suggest you to read this, I will also tell to not take some of the contents of the book as offensive because author has only told the reality with respect to women.
