On New Year's Day, 1931, Jawaharlal Nehru began a remarkable series of letters on the history of the world to his daughter, Indira, then thirteen years old. Over the next thirty months, Nehru wrote nearly two hundred letters in this series, which were later published as Glimpses of World History.
With its panoramic sweep and its gripping narrative flow, all the more remarkable for being written in prison where Nehru had no recourse to reference books or a library, Glimpses of World History covers the rise and fall of empires and civilizations from Greece and Rome to China and West Asia; great figures such as Ashoka and Genghis Khan, Gandhi and Lenin; wars and revolutions, democracies and dictatorships. An enduring classic, this book is dazzling testimony to the breadth of Nehru's world view, his grasp of the lessons of history, and of the

Firstly, excellent book. If you're a parent and have a thirteen year old child (that was the age Indira Gandhi was when Nehru started writing her the series of letters that culminated in this book), this is the book for him or her. Do not feel intimidated by the size. History taught in school is often banal and insomnia-inducing. Nehru writes in a simple but moving style, and no doubt children will find the book stimulating. For adults, yes, you can read this book, too! Nehru often provides insights in the book that only adults will properly appreciate. And besides, if you've never been interested in history, but are looking for an engaging read that'll not only keep one occupied for a few days but also stimulate one's mind, this is the very book for you. Trust me, you will not regret it for an instant.
Secondly, kudos to Flipkart for the timely delivery. They said three days and three days it took. I stay in Bombay, but was in Mangalore at the time of ordering this book. Not in Mangalore proper, but in Uchila, a small district just outside the city limits. Flipkart tracked me down nevertheless. The poor man who came to deliver the book was highly inconvenienced by the fact that he could not reach me by phone and had to roam around for three hours looking for the house I was in. He did not give up and turn around, however. He managed to find me by asking all and sundry about me. This did not help at first, as the house I was in was my grandmothers and book had been stamped with my name. Eventually, he managed to track the house down when somebody recognised its name (also stamped on the book; a most fortuitous stroke of luck). He was irate by the time he reached my house. Nevertheless, I was impressed by his steadfastness and his utter refusal to accept any token for his efforts, nor did he ask for one. I am grateful to Flipkart and one can be sure that I shall get all my books from here, henceforth.
This book is prodigious work of Jawaharlal Nehru. He combined his knowledge with some other ancient books written in a order from the ancient to the morden world. Yll get the perfect idea of how the world is transformed, he explained about many philosophers, scientists, leaders, rebels, traitors, freedom fights....and many more.if u read this book ull feel that ure going on a time machine to the past.
This book is a masterpiece, to say the least. It not only makes you awe at the genius of Nehru but also expands your vision of the world. It takes you all around the world and makes sure you understand every trivial event that shaped the modern world. The sheer size of the book intimidates one, but if you are really willing to devote your time to this worthwhile book, there is no doubt that after you finish reading the last page of it you'd feel a little hollow hoping the book could go on and on. This book is indispensable for anyone who is looking to expand his vision of the world.
Gives us an insight into the many facades of world history from a beginners point of view. Written in a very simple language (moreover cause it was meant to be read by a 13 year old girl) it also gives the reader an in-depth feel of what it was in those times when our great freedom fighters were fighting the final war of Indian independence. Written by Pandit Nehru who himself was a seasoned sociologist, this book never fails to arouse interest and always has an appeal about itself. I'm reading it for the second time! :)
The book contains amazing information. The language is clear and simple. The dates are not accurate because Nehru wrote this book in jail where he had no library or source to review his notes. It is actually collection of letters written by him to Indira Gandhi. I appreciate his work.
