\"Dazzling.As subtle as it is powerful. Remarkable.\"--New York Times

\"This outstanding novel is a banquet for all the senses we bring to reading.\" --Newsweek

\"Hauntingly wonderful . . . Exquisite . . . Unforgettable.\"--USA Today

Winner of the 1997 Booker Prize - - New York Times Best Seller

Born from two eggs in the one womb of their beloved mother Ammu, Rahel and Esthappen have little to cling to but each other, and the occasional joy that passes through their young lives like a cool breeze on a sweltering Indian day. When Ammu, divorced and disappointed, returns with the twins to her family home in southern India, their worlds begin to open wider, all the while closing in on them.

As the three arrive into the arms of Ammu\'s eccentric and unforgettable relatives, a tragedy begins to unfold that will propel them toward a fate that has perhaps stalked them from their inception. Yet, throughout the pain and hardships of things large and small, the humor, humanity, and ferociously perceptive intelligence only bestowed upon seven-year-olds shines gloriously through.

At the core of this extraordinary, bittersweet story is the unforgettable narrative voice of first-time novelist Arundhati Roy, a uniquely talented writer capable of moving us beyond words with the perfect sentence and a profoundly insightful wisdom that far surpasses her years.

very very shallow......a single mother is shown with such irresponsible behaviour. instead of showing that ammu is working hard for making a future for her children she is shown falling in love and marrying numerous times. why? in india esp. kerala single mothers are much more responsible and take c… (View complete review)

Slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!

First of all the quality of the pages is very bad. Secondly, The books which have won Man Booker Prize should never be read.. They are slower than your imagination. Slower than the films winning Best Film in Oscars. Still I shall commend the authors ability to describe in details the events , natur… (View complete review)

Splendid. In a word.

Have to come in terms with the fact that Only those with childhood still in them, would enjoy this book. How can such a beautiful language even exist?- That was my initial reaction to this. Ms. Roy demands such strong emotion from her readers that it makes you really wonder if you were an invisible being lingering around when the lives of the characters unfold in front of you. It literally serenades you, making you believe that these characters, really, yes, do exist. However, it your imagination that tells you that they are real.

i wish she wrote more fiction. touching more lives with each o

A Rarity

This book is the best pick for a broad and open minded person.. Tells you how "Love" is always associated with sadness, how women are made scape goats for everything that happens, how a person's childhood experiences affect his/her perspectives and whole life.. The book has less to tell and lot to infer. So unleash ur minds open and then start reading the book...
PS: If u dont get the viability of the story, finish reading it and then spend a whole day thinking about it.. U'll get to know how serious the story is (Personal experience)..

This story will stay with you for a long long time

Arundhati is a poetess, an artist who spins munificence with the ordinary. Her story - a part biography is like fine music to even an untrained ear. She's one writer that I admire mostly because her words tell us a story in visuals. You feel the pain, the struggle, the sly humor and the God she cherishes in small things...

A must read for every one who likes good literature...

An avg story line but still I'm thinking of reading it again

Each character is weird, the story is full of remorse... But the way Roy has written.... BEAUTIFUL.... The story keeps you glued and it really takes you to the place described and live those character, after reading the book you are in a complete different mood... The writing is that powerful.

If you are looking for something different from that of romantic/action genre, I recommend this book.

Oh you do need some free brain and a huge dictionary!!

The book's status made me buy this book, I opened it, closed it, opened it, closed it>

It has some serious and huge unknown words and the story is not in chronological order.
Do yourself a favor and also order a dictionary along with this, or download one. You will need it!!

I left the book in the middle, but will start it again sometime, where I have the patience and time.

The God of small things

The story keeps moving between past and present in no specific order. It is difficult to make out the start or end of the book as if you can just start from any page , like i said no specific order. The writer thinke very differntly from a common man. The similies are just amazing. She would suddenly compare a situation or someone with something that only she can imagine and beleive me it is beautiful. I looked forward to every comparison she made thorughout the book. The book does bind you towards the end when you are looking for the climax. But it ends pretty abruptly. Probably the author ne

For an average Indian who wishes to read between the lines of his society, this book offers the perfect description. The narration is spell binding. Subjects touched through those narration shows the ugly face of our society. Face behind the mask of pretentious culture and religious practices and namesake modernity.

The chapters begin abruptly one describing the present the next one might describe the past. ( an average novel reader who reads different kind of narrations might be able to cope with it easily) But those abrupt narration of past and present creates a suspense and generates the

A ballad

The God of small things
By Arundhati Roy
A book which has words woven seamlessly and they play in your mind as a cadence that starts following a rhythm like poetry. When one is reading it, the words become a song and they keep humming inside your mind. The author adopts a style of writing in such a manner that subtle instances build into your conscience and the story becomes yours. Words are used as such as the mind imbues with them impromptu instead of being grammatically correct. A not so interesting story which charms you with simple ideas that “where the love laws lay down who should be lo

Must read for everyone

The best story about Kerala by a non-Keralite. One of the finest works of Indian English literature. Simple langauge (except for the fisrt paragraph). So deep in meaning. No twists, turns, tricky endings, surprises. You know what is going to happen all the way through. The journey is fun, not the destination.

THE journey to the end

This novel is a personal journey towards the end. Each and every page silently directed me to the end, the main story gets over in only three pages. But the aftermath forms the entirety of the novel. Every page I read created the suspense to doom. As aptly said this novel beautifully signifies the journey of the protagonist whose life left them years ago, they are living without life and evey page reminded me of that.
