One of the most famous love stories of all time - now a West End musical

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Civil War, Margaret Mitchell's magnificent historical epic is an unforgettable tale of love and loss, of a nation mortally divided and a people forever changed. Above all, it is the story of beautiful, ruthless Scarlett O'Hara and the dashing soldier of fortune, Rhett Butler.

About the Author
Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell Marsh (November 8, 1900 - August 16, 1949), popularly known as Margaret Mitchell was an American author, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for her novel, Gone with the Wind, published in 1936. The novel is one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than 30 million copies (see list of best-selling books). An American film adaptation, released in 1939, became the highest-grossing film in the history of Hollywood, and received a record-breaking number of Academy Awards.

A Must Read for Anyone With a Conscience

With Scarlett O'Hara, one of literature's most well known personalities, as it's lead protagonist, Gone With The Wind lives upto all the hype that surrounds it,as one of the greatest love stories ever,by actually not being an out-and-out love story.
A great narration that transports you to the not-so-familiar times of the late 1800s,real characters who have both virtues and vices and are therefore, both endearing and not so endearing at the same time,Gone With The Wind makes one see the other side (i.e. the southerners' outlook) of the civil war coin, helps one broaden their outlook, entertains, and takes one on a great emotional ride, all at the same time.
More than anything, one grows with Scarlett as she does, with every page of the book.
So,I'd definitely recommend Gone With The Wind, for at the end of the day,Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler will make you fall in love with them,as they do themselves. It really is a book for people of all generations, and the ultimate love story.

Could have been trimmed

I picked up this book hoping to save people the trouble of deciding on this book. Well, this 1000 page romantic novel is worth it's penny if you have the patience to read it till the end. The plot is written around 1861 when slavery was legal and negroes were predominant slave and nicknamed "darkies". It shall be sometime before you get a handle on the english dialect of darkies. Protagonist of the novel is a souther bellle called Scarlett O' Hara who not only has the hour glass figure but also claims to have the smallest waist in the county, daughter of the richest cotton farmer and owner of the highest number of slaves.

The story revolves around Scarlett's love for Ashley whom she eventually never marries. In the meanwhile she is widowed twice and has two kids from the previous husbands, eventually lands up being wife of Rhett Butler who never had a reputation of being a gentleman after he refused to marry a girl with whom he had spent the night in the woods.

I had rate this book 4 out of 5 only if they had trim it down to some 600 pages and save the readers from the horror of imagination.

A must-read for any book lover!

There are just way too many things I love about this book!

One, it a journey into a life that I, a city-dweller in the 21st century has never, and will never lead; two, it has characters you easily relate to and feel connected to; three, it is a very effective portrayal of life in its true unfair sense and not the perfect, ideal one that we read about in a lot of other books.

Rhet Butler is another reason I read this book again and again, and each time I read it, I find myself wistfully wishing men like that existed in real life!

Scarlet's character is another intriguing factor of the book. As you read along you love her, hate her, and wonder what on earth was she thinking; much like you do with the people in your life!

So all in all, I love the book. have read it at least 4 times, and it never gets boring!

Magic...

I honestly do not know whether to give this book 5 stars for being one of the most completely engrossing, shocking, and emotionally absorbing pieces of literature ever written, or to give it 0 stars for being the most tragic, unendingly upsetting, disturbing book I've ever read. It was so completely absorbing and magical. I can’t even begin to describe it. Just like love and other abstract stuff, this book needs to be experienced. A must must must read.

Classic

Awesome characterization, If you want to understand women(although it is impossible) it gives you great insights to the different facets of character of a woman. Margaret has evolved the characters quite greatly.
Must read for people in Love or who lost there love(although girls may not like the ending) but it gives a great insight into the much overhyped word called love.
