Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make The Leap. and Others Don't (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.1719

The Challenge
Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning.

But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?

The Study
For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great?

The Standards
Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world's greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck.

The Comparisons
The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good?

Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness -- why some companies make the leap and others don't.

The Findings
The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include:

  • Level 5 Leaders: The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness.
  • The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence.
  • A Culture of Discipline: When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. Technology Accelerators: Good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology.
  • The Flywheel and the Doom Loop: Those who launch radical change programs and wrenching restructurings will almost certainly fail to make the leap.

“Some of the key concepts discerned in the study,” comments Jim Collins, "fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.”

Perhaps, but who can afford to ignore these findings?

His example of GE and Coca-Cola is very aptly simplified and inculcated to the curiosity and attitude in different avenues. His implications on Leadership qualities in Chaper-2 emphasise the caring of credit and fame when you think of forward progress in the attempts and involvements. The narration and charting of Darwin Smith???s principles of Level 5 Hierarchy is well placed to make the readers understand very easily. He marks with a modern equivalent comparing with God to answer everything. The example of extra dimension derived by Hewlet and Packard making the transition from good to best to ???Built to Last??? (Page 194) makes us to this and realise the fact of change and turn to be best. The story of Walt Disney proclaims that hard work has a reward when it is initiated with self-confidence and commitment. The contents inside the shaded blocks are the concentrated abstracts of the contents of the chapter. Very aptly extracted to reach the readers and to record in their memory. The inclusions in Appendices are most useful abstracts, as an added value of this book. The style of simplified writing is to be appreciated. Possessing this book is a status of prestige, being it is a very good reference with practical examples saying about the people known to us and also living truth. The whole presentation has to be admired. Being an HR Trainer, truly I could learn lot of facts and truths to motivate and share with my students and clients those who are thriving good at present and aiming to be the Great. Thanks and congratulations!

Book is GOOD, RETURN SERVICE / REPLACEMENT IS PATHETIC

Hi,

The books purchased from flipkart WERE packaged beautifully and cautiously so as not to damage the books. I had recently ordered a lot of books together considering the service of flipkart good on one book to be good at all put together, I was in a shock to see the pathetic quality of packaging done to the books, all books stacked into one box and that too without taking caution that because of the size the corners of some books might get smudged. 3 out of 8 books ordered were damaged at the corners and I had to go through lot of pain to get these replaced.... Decent Read

The book primarily talks of five major characteristics that have shaped some of the more successful organizations. Though the headers can be searched online, reading the book has got its own charm.

The author brings in numerous examples and this validates the points all the more. There is some criticism about the research and the findings, but if you are in a professional role - the headers will give a headsup on some of the key factors that change the way an organization works.
