Summary of the Book
Henry Shackleford lived as a slave until a legendary abolitionist named John Brown appears in town. An argument between Brown and Henry's master leads to Henry having to follow Brown, who has mistakenly fooled himself that Henry is a girl. Months pass as Henry tries to keep Brown believing the lie in order to stay safe and alive.
