Book Summary of The Grapes Of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath is a narrative that chronicles the life of the Joad family, during the Great Depression. The protagonist of the story, Tom Joad, takes his family on a journey to California, after their farms are destroyed in a massive dust storm in Oklahoma. The promise of higher salary and better life at California makes the Joads invest everything they have in their journey. What follows is a series of disappointments, as they discover some harsh truths that wait for them in their destination. The book was initially published in the year 1939, and it won the Pulitzer Prize and The National Book Award. The Grapes of Wrath is widely read in college literature classes and schools across the United States.

John Steinbeck was born in 1902, and has authored twenty-seven books. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1962. Steinbeck completed his graduation from Salinas High School, and served as a war correspondent in the year 1943, during World War II. Some of his popular novels include Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, In Dubious Battle, Tortilla Flat, and Travels With Charley. Brilliant.

Penguin is usually a safe bet and this edition is no different. The introduction is a bit longish but once the book begins you forget all that. The paper quality is good. The ink doesn't smudge while turning pages. Just a small complaint that the back looks dusty when held in light. All this regarding the appearance and physical aspect. Quality-wise easily in my top 5. First ever Steinbeck book I read. Definitely not my last.
