Book: The Grasshopper's Run In this brilliantly written debut novel, Siddharth Sarma brings to vivid life, a little-known slice of history from the time of the World War II in Asia. The time when the Imperial Japanese Army, undefeated everywhere on the Asian mainland, finally invades British India through the east. A fortnight before the main invasion, an ambitious and amoral Japanese officer orders the massacre of a village of the Ao Naga tribe. Among those killed is Uti, grandson of the eldest Ao chief. Gojen Rajkhowa was Uti's best friend. When Uti's grandfather declares a private war against the Japanese, Gojen resolves to journey to Kohima, where the battle for 'The Stalingrad of the East' has just begun.
There, within the heart of the battle which will turn the tide of World War II in Asia, he goes to seek the man who took the best part of his life from him. His quest will take him beyond the edge of his familiar world, through mist and smoke and an ancient Naga legend, into the unknown ...
Book Reviews of The Grasshopper's Run
At Last, An Indian Novel Told Well Review by RohanThis is probably the first genuine young adult novel by an Indian, and boy is it good! It could also be the first ever fiction by an Indian on the Second World War. Based in the North-East in 1944 during the Japanese invasion of India, it tells the story of a tribe's search for a Japanese colonel responsible for a massacre. But more than that, it is a beautifully-told tale of a boy's passage into adulthood through one of the most difficult chapters of world history. Great characters, raw action, many magical tales and legends from the North-east, and excellent storytelling that is based on what must have been some really detailed research. And you'll absolutely enjoy the central character in the story.
I bought this book for my son because I thought this would be a nice way to get him interested in world history and the North-east, then I started reading it myself and got hooked. Trust me, this, for a change, is a world-class novel by an Indian author. By the way, someone should change the author's name as listed here: it is Siddhartha Sarma.
