Great Expectations is Charles Dickens's classic story of an orphan named Pip and how he braves poverty, misery and ultimately finds a dream of becoming a gentleman.

Summary of the Book

When seven year old Pip goes to the graveyard to visit his parents’ graves, he runs into an escaped convict. The man forces Pip to bring him food and a file to cut away his shackles. Soon, Pip realizes that all his troubles begin there. He begins to go to a wealthy lady’s house to keep her adopted daughter company. Everything seems fine until a mysterious lawyer comes to tell him that he has inherited a lot of money. Years later, Pip is neck-deep in debt and meets the convict once again. He discovers that this man is his mysterious benefactoer and he has now turned to him once again to help him escape the long arm of the law. Pip’s life begins to steer away from his great expectations, and he strays from the path of becoming what he always dream of: a perfect gentleman.

Charles Dickens was an English novelist, short story writer and social critic. He is best remembered for his prolific writing, and especially the novels: David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol and The Pickwick Papers.

Considered the literary juggernaut of his age, Dickens constantly portrayed the poor and orphaned in his novels and stories, and touched upon the poor living situations which were rampant in those days.
