Guns, Germs, And Steel (English) 2nd Edition (Hardcover) Price: Rs. 1,940

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Guns, Germs, and Steel is a brilliant work answering the question of why the peoples of certain continents succeeded in invading other continents and conquering or displacing their peoples. This edition includes a new chapter on Japan and all-new illustrations drawn from the television series. Until around 11,000 BC, all peoples were still Stone Age hunter/gatherers. At that point, a great divide occurred in the rates that human societies evolved. In Eurasia, parts of the Americas, and Africa, farming became the prevailing mode of existence when indigenous wild plants and animals were domesticated by prehistoric planters and herders. As Jared Diamond vividly reveals, the very people who gained a head start in producing food would collide with preliterate cultures, shaping the modern world through conquest, displacement, and genocide. The paths that lead from scattered centers of food to broad bands of settlement had a great deal to do with climate and geography. But how did differences in societies arise? Why weren't native Australians, Americans, or Africans the ones to colonize Europe? Diamond dismantles pernicious racial theories tracing societal differences to biological differences. He assembles convincing evidence linking germs to domestication of animals, germs that Eurasians then spread in epidemic proportions in their voyages of discovery. In its sweep, Guns, Germs and Steel encompasses the rise of agriculture, technology, writing, government, and religion, providing a unifying theory of human history as intriguing as the histories of dinosaurs and glaciers.

Excellent book ! It changed my worldview

I really liked this book. Makes a very interesting point about how civilizations evolved and why some (the western ones) prospered while others remained as they were. All the while I was looking for a racist angle that says westerns societies prospered because they are inherently 'superior' but ther… (View complete review)

Spellbounding

One of the best, if not the best books I have read until now. Taught me so much on evolution, it is entertaining and educative at the same time. The reasoning and the depth given to each detail is very good. Evolution, roots of agriculture, writing, technology development is exceptionally told. Explained very lucidly this book is a must for every person interested in History, Science, and Geography.
Thank you for writing this book.

Mind boggling ..

I will not overwhelm with a plethora of insights presented in this book. However , the only thing that marks this book outstanding is its scientific attitude towards describing historical progression in broad brush strokes. In nearly 400 pages Dr. Diamond tried to hypothesize greatest trends in human civilization (in nearly last 13k years), and in his way fission-ed Agriculture , Zoology, Environmental science, paleontology, anthropology , archaeology and numerous scientific studies to interpret history. The hypothesis's made , are so deep rooted that towards the end of the book one can guess

Superb book!

One of the rare books where the author keeps asking the question why till you arrive at a point where you cannot ask that question anymore - truly scientific approach. Starts off as a dreary, slow read, but becomes immensely interesting as you get deeper into it. Wonderful book!

PS: This doesn't mention India, so don't be disappointed by that.

An eye-opener!

This book is simply superb in its ability to bring across a new perspective on the way we see the world. It will shatter those long term notions that we all had about some human races being more modern than the others. A brilliant combination of geography biology evolutionary science. Go for it!

Rigorous Explanation of Historical Unfolding

Jared makes an scientist like case for explaining historical reasons for how/why things have shaped up differently for different people on different continents.
Mildly repetative( less than 10%), but the rigour and logic in arguments is pervasive even though dealing with a topic falling under "History" category.
In the end he even makes a case to consider History as a Social "Science".
The book has in store some surprises, if you need to know where bananas came from, or when did people start farming in Australia, or how Nelson Mandela originally does not belong to SAF

I really liked this book. Makes a very interesting point about how civilizations evolved and why some (the western ones) prospered while others remained as they were. All the while I was looking for a racist angle that says westerns societies prospered because they are inherently 'superior' but there was hardly any. All the evidences he provides seems to be valid as per my understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to the end. It gives you a lot to take home.

By the way, thanks to Flipkart for the timely delivery, as usual .

A great read!

This is a great book for anyone who is interested to know more about the history of the human civilization. I'm still half way through the book, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. Jared Diamond has meticulously collected evidence to support his ideas and concepts. Personally, the best thing I have liked is the information I get about our past. For eg, "Why Native Americans settled much after Eurasians?", "How the decision to farm or to remain hunters affected the future of a society?" and so on.

I definitely recommend this book.
