Guru Dutt, one of the most talented Indian filmmakers, was also a very popular actor and a renowned producer. Although his films were within the limited parameters of the box office, they left a lasting impression on the minds of the audience. Guru Dutt had a team which remained constant through some of his movies. The team consisted of the writer, Abrar Alvi, the cameraman, V.K. Murthy, and the music director, S.D. Burman. Together with Dutt, they have created some of the most remarkable films in the history of Indian cinema. The book, Guru Dutt Ke Saath Ek Dashak, focuses on the relationship of Guru Dutt and Abrar Alvi over a decade, till Guru Dutt’s death in 1964. Abrar Alvi was a talented, but an unsung writer as the author describes him, and was known for his scripts some of which include Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Pyaasa. Abrar Alvi’s first film with Guru Dutt, titled Aar Paar, was a revolutionary work of art which brought a sense of realism in Indian cinema. The book brings out not only the success but also the difficulties and pain that each of them had to go through while making these films.
