Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets is the second book in the Harry Potter fantasy series by J.K. Rowling. The series is based on the adventures of a young wizard named Harry Potter who struggles to strike a balance between being a normal boy and being an unwilling, oft-misunderstood hero. He attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry’s nemesis is a dark wizard named Lord Voldemort, who seems to be feared by everyone in the wizarding world.

This book begins with a house-elf named Dobby warning Harry against returning to school for the second year, as terrible things are about to happen there. However, Harry ignores his warning and returns to the school.

The new year in school begins with a series of threatening messages that signal grave danger for students who do not come from all-magical families. The rumor is that the Chamber of Secrets has been mysteriously reopened a second time. The chamber was built to house a monster that could only be controlled by the true heir of Slytherin.

True to Dobby’s prediction, the school is haunted by horrific attacks in which some students are targeted and left frozen (or petrified). Harry, Ron, and Hermione spend a lot of time delving into the mysterious attacks, eventually learning of Lord Voldemort’s attempt to regain power.

Amidst all the mysterious attacks plaguing the school, the trio has to grapple with a self-obsessed new professor, sabotaged Quidditch matches, Harry’s ability to speak Parseltongue, a magical diary, and a whiny ghost named Moaning Myrtle. Their second year at school promises to be no less dramatic and eventful than the first.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets was first published by Bloomsbury in 1998 in the United Kingdom. It met with universal acclaim, but also courted controversy for its supposed occult subtext. It went on to receive several awards including a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the Whitaker’s Platinum Book Award. The book has since been adapted for film and video games.
