Swedenborg, a noted Swedish scientist, philosopher and theologian, is best known for his later writings, in which he presents ideas both Christian and ecumenical, for a new spiritual era or new church to be known as the New Jerusalem. In Heaven and Its Wonders Swedenborg deals with Heaven and related topics as varied as angels, man, the sun, light, heat, the four quarters in heaven, time in heaven, appearances in heaven, garments worn by angels, mansions of the angels, space in heaven, governments in heaven, divine worship, speech of angels, Gentiles or people not included in the church in heaven, infants in heaven, rich and poor in heaven, marriages in heaven, and heavenly joy and happiness. He also examines the world of spirits and the state of man after death; man after death; leaving behind the terrestrial body; the first, second, and third states of man after death; and the difficulty of leading the life that leads to heaven. Finally, he tackles Hell with a discussion of who is in hell, what is meant by hellfire, gnashing of teeth, wickedness and diabolical arts of infernal spirits, the appearance and plurality of the hells, and the equilibrium between heaven and hell.
