The book provides a clear exposition of essential tools of applied mathematics from a modern point of view and meets complete requirements of engineering and computer science students. Every effort has been made to keep the presentation at once simple and lucid. It is written with the firm conviction that a good book is one that can be read with minimum guidance from the instructor. To achieve this, more than the usual number of solved examples, followed by properly graded problems have been given. Many of the examples and problems have been selected from recent papers of various university and other engineering examinations. Basic Concepts and Useful Information has been given in an Appendix. However, the subject matter has been set in eight main units:
An exhaustive list of 'Objective Type of Questions' has been given at the end of each chapter. Standard Tables, Answers to Problems, and a fairly comprehensive Index is given at the end.

Engg Mathematics by Grewal is a very helpful book throughout your B.Tech/B.E. The author really did a commendable job. Not only does it help you to pass exams, but also it increases your interest in mathematics.
Do not read this book if you really want to learn mathematics. This book is nothing more that 'manipulation using formulas'. Learn mathematics from better books like Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Kreyszig or Advanced Engineering mathematics by jain and Iyengar. The extra time you spend when you read these books will be a boon to you when you go for higher studies.
This book is excellent if you need enough problems to score well in Engineering exams. It has a large number of problems from different universities.
However, if you really want to understand the concepts well, I would suggest looking at books which handle that particular topic in math separately. For example, if you are interested in Matrices and Determinants, study a book on Linear Algebra.
This is a good book that has everything in one place and I'll give it a 4/5 for that. One more star if it had a little more depth in theory.
If you really like math please dont even consider looking at it.
This book is one of the worst you can find around. No explanation whatsoever just examples. You will be clueless. Yes you will clear your 1st / 2nd year engineering exams with it, but if you think about knowledge , no way. Better to read Kreyszig any day.
The ultimate book for basic understanding and approaching problems. For GATE preparation.. no other maths book is needed...only Grewal is enough ..it has everything, set of general formulas in front....proofs for every concept...important things to be noted under "Observation"...
And when i say sucks,i mean it literally....its a goddamn joke for a mathematics textbook...never even consider buying it if yo...
