A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India 1st Edition 1st Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.582

The book is a visually rich text on the ancient and medieval history of India.

Summary Of The Book

Written by an expert on the ancient history of India, the book provides a comprehensive overview of India through ancient and early medieval times. It explores the time period from the Stone Age to the 12th century AD, taking into consideration both archaeological findings, as well as, literary descriptions of those times. It begins by exploring the most ancient times of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic ages, eventually progressing to the Harappan civilization and then to the Magadha and Mauryan empire of early medieval times.

Key socio-cultural issues of each era have been discussed in great detail and all prevalent points of views are examined on significant contentious issues. The descriptions are accompanied with beautiful colour pictures of archaeological findings, historical maps, and drawings. Though written essentially for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in history, the book would be found equally stimulating by the general reader interested in learning about ancient Indian history.

Salient Features

  • Extensive use of visuals in full colour—over 350 photographs, maps, and sketches
  • Pedagogically developed boxes on key concepts, primary sources, further discussion of specific issues, recent discoveries and new directions in research
  • Extensive cross-referencing of themes and concepts
  • A glossary of important terms
  • Detailed references and lists of further readings

Giant Size Book, Size can make you crazy. Best Book for upse.........

I ordered the book, got on 4th day. When I received, i thought there has been some kind of error on seeing the size and weight.... The I thought must have got 2 books or something like that. And when i opened, i was amazed. Its a very large book.... Dimensions are not given in summary by flipkart. So I'll tell you that...
.
.
.
About the book, its a treasure of knowledge. And not just history, it also gives a lot of general knowledge. I loved history from childhood, But i never knew the name of the FIRST historian and never thought about it. But the 1st para told it was "Kalhana"....

Excellent Reference Text...

This humongous work is an excellent reference for Ancient Indian History. It reads like a novel and accompanying photographs makes the learning process very enriching. I bought it, read it like a story book and finished it in 3 days straight.

Excellent source material for IAS history optional. You would not need any other book for the map question on Ancient India. The maps in this book are that good!!! The analysis given in chapter 9 or for that matter in the entire book is beyond belief. But IAS aspirants who have taken history optional should be aware of the fact that this book contains...

Excellent source material for IAS history optional. You would not need any other book for the map question on Ancient India. The maps in this book are that good!!! The analysis given in chapter 9 or for that matter in the entire book is beyond belief. But IAS aspirants who have taken history optional should be aware of the fact that this book contains so much of content that it can easily overwhelm a beginner with information overdose. There is so much of data that a novice might be at a loss at what to include and what not to include in answer.

It is best used as reference text alongside the revered work of Romila Thapar on Ancient India or Wonder that was India by AL Bhasham.

A treat for any student of history

If only more history books were written this way, with clarity in the writer's mind about what can be left out. Although it may appear as a text meant only for those with serious academic interests, a few dozen pages later, one is sure that its a book worth recommending to anyone interested in knowing about our cultural roots. The chapters on the Mauryan Empire are such a concise summary that saves the common reader from going through volumes that have been written by other authors. One gets insights from Thapar, Kangale, Radhakumud Mookerjee and others while going through each chapter.

Best textbook for ancient History, by a mile!

No matter what one specializes in later, the first year of any graduation course involves Ancient History, and books therefore have to be geared to those who are just beginning their graduation studies. This book does the job amicably. It is written in simple language without oversimplifying ANYTHING. Not only are known complex issues dealt with carefully, even themes which are held to be "settled" are carefully argued out with mention of sources at every stage.

This book does the job amicably. It is written in simple language without oversimplifying ANYTHING. Not only are known complex issues dealt with carefully, even themes which are held to be "settled" are carefully argued out with mention of sources at every stage.

The book may be a bit bulky ( I was terrified by the size when I got my signed copy at a seminar) for first year students, but the text is well spaced out with lots of pictures. ALL are rendered in color which makes this book one of the best illustrated books out there. Maps are in color as well, and are simple and highly descriptive.

Debates, not only of history, but in anthropology, philology and sociology are discussed in great detail, with the views of the latest authors included. The book dispenses with the sometimes irritating (remember the book is aimed at graduation students, not research scholars) footnotes but mentions works with date of publication in brackets.

Finally, this book is good enough for competitive examinations if you have about a month to devote to ancient history.

All in all, a highly commendable effort by Prof. Upinder Singh of Delhi University.
