Summary Of The Book
Written by an expert on the ancient history of India, the book provides a comprehensive overview of India through ancient and early medieval times. It explores the time period from the Stone Age to the 12th century AD, taking into consideration both archaeological findings, as well as, literary descriptions of those times. It begins by exploring the most ancient times of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic ages, eventually progressing to the Harappan civilization and then to the Magadha and Mauryan empire of early medieval times.
Key socio-cultural issues of each era have been discussed in great detail and all prevalent points of views are examined on significant contentious issues. The descriptions are accompanied with beautiful colour pictures of archaeological findings, historical maps, and drawings. Though written essentially for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in history, the book would be found equally stimulating by the general reader interested in learning about ancient Indian history.
About the Author
Upinder Singh is a professor of history at Delhi University. She is the daughter of the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
She has written a number of books on Indian history including Rethinking Early Medieval India: A Reader, Ancient India: New Research, and Ancient Delhi. She has also written numerous articles and journals on various aspects of Indian history.
Her research work is primarily focused on the study of ancient and medieval India. Her works explore various socio-cultural aspects of that time period, covering its religions, communities, and classes.
She did her MA and M.Phil. in History from Delhi University and received her Ph.D. in History from McGill University, Canada. She was a lecturer at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, for over two decades. She also served briefly as a visiting professor at University of Leuven, Belgium. She was awarded the Infosys Award for Social Sciences in History in 2009.

Giant Size Book, Size can make you crazy. Best Book for upse.........
I ordered the book, got on 4th day. When I received, i thought there has been some kind of error on seeing the size and weight.... The I thought must have got 2 books or something like that. And when i opened, i was amazed. Its a very large book.... Dimensions are not given in summary by flipkart. So I'll tell you that...

About the book, its a treasure of knowledge. And not just history, it also gives a lot of general knowledge. I loved history from childhood, But i never knew the name of the FIRST historian and never thought about it. But the 1st para told it was "Kalhana". OMG, really great book. I don't know what more to say.... I'm just sad that the author has not written similar book on other half of medieval history and Modern History.......!! Or I may not have found it yet....

(Note).... Its a large book, don't know if its possible to memorize it so mark the important things as you read...... Trust me, you will have to mark many things as many things are important and not known...... Thanks....!!!

A treat for any student of history
If only more history books were written this way, with clarity in the writer's mind about what can be left out. Although it may appear as a text meant only for those with serious academic interests, a few dozen pages later, one is sure that its a book worth recommending to anyone interested in knowing about our cultural roots. The chapters on the Mauryan Empire are such a concise summary that saves the common reader from going through volumes that have been written by other authors. One gets insights from Thapar, Kangale, Radhakumud Mookerjee and others while going through each chapter.
A fulfilling experience and a must read for anyone who wants to explore our ancient history.
