In 1867 he was appointed an assistant librarian in the British Museum, position which he held until 1875. From 1884 to 1890 he was Clark Lecturer in English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. Among his principal works are Books on the Table, More Books on the Table, Henrik Ibsen, Thomas Gray, and Sir Walter Raleigh -- in the English Men of Letters Series.
