A History of Modern India by Ishita Banerjee Dubey

The book is well written and includes the insights of modern scholarship on Indian History. In recent years, the way Indian History is taught and studied have changed a great deal. It would appear that the book is written for undergraduate students of Indian history, but I would also recommend it for teachers of Class XI and XII. The Maps, pictures and timelines also add value to the book.
