Just about ok

I bought this book to prepare the 'world history' part of Civil Services Mains GS Paper I. Considering the lack of good Indian books on the topic, this is a welcome effort. It gives a broad overview of the period 1789 - 1945. There is no coverage of the the post-1945 period. The facts including major events, dates and personalities are given well, but analysis and elaboration is lacking. Not surprising given that the whole topic is covered in just 350 pages. The book is not edited well, plenty of spelling mistakes, and even discontinuity in the text at a couple of places. Finally, the book... ()

Finally, the book is a good read overall, the author has done painstaking research and not just culled facts from a lot many books (as tends to be the case with many of the Indian guide-books). But the wait of Civil Services aspirants for that one well-written, well-updated, Indian book on Modern World History will continue.

Not upto the mark

I bought this book hoping to get a crisp concise idea on modern world history for Civil Services Exams. However, I was disappointed with it and I lost my patience mid-way. It is definitely a good effort by the author - it is well researched and explains peculiar terms, but I guess that is about it. The link between events is not established very well and there is ambiguity in the text, sometimes also because of grammatical errors, excessive use of passive voice and pronouns. It does not take things from the basic and proceeds on various assumptions because of which the reader may often have... ()

Also some chapters are painfully long and unnecessarily elaborate. While the French Revolution chapter takes over 100 pages, World War I is devoted only 20.
The book is average at best.

Professional

The book presents many facets and facts of each part of the modern history. Printed in nice paper and written in a Wikipedia-style documentary taste, the approach to explain the most boring of proceedings with tonnes of facts in a neutral manner deserves applauding.

The best part is that each chapter concludes with memorable personalities, dates, and quotes, along with the summary. This book is a professional retelling of the modern world's story that is good for even the experts, examination preparation, and casual reading.

Sometimes, there's too much detail and blunder on passiveness, like a statement by some current economist is mixed in the main text in a way that it seems like that economist was of the time of the past, i.e., where the story is.

Rest all is cool.
