A History Of The World In 100 Objects (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.854

A History Of The World In 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor is a book that reflects how certain fascinating things created by man from stone age till the twenty-first century has helped him shape his life and aided in his cultural, social, and personal development. In this book, the author has selected a 100 objects - right from the first chopping tool made in Africa to the credit cards we use in modern world, and has examined at length how these objects has gained their importance and also their contribution to the mankind. The author explains how seemingly simple objects can act as a window through which we can peep into the lives of people who lived thousands of years before us. MacGregor presents a very informative, yet interesting account of various objects of historical importance, which are today available in museums worldwide. He stresses on the point that a museum is not a dull place where objects from the past are stored in a dark room, but offers a refreshingly new perspective as to how these objects have shaped the history of mankind. A History Of The World In 100 Objects serves as an interesting read for history lovers.
The author of the book Neil MacGregor was born on June 16, 1946. He is a British Historian and is the current Director of the British Museum. He has also authored Britain's Paintings and The Daily Telegraph Britain's Paintings. Before taking over this job, he worked as the editor of the Burlington Magazine and has also served as the Director of the National Gallery. MacGregor received the Green Prize from the Edinburgh University as a law student, but his love for art made him take a degree in arts, and he took a history degree in Courtauld Institute, London. He taught history from 1981 to 1987 at the University of Reading and has made a considerable number of radio and TV appearances.

Excellent compilation and analysis

As per the author, history is typically written by the conqueror and little is known of the conquered. The conquered have typically left behind objects they used (in day to day chores) or fought with or worshiped. Through such objects found from across the globe and available at the British Museum, the author and his team have very capably reconstructed what may have existed in earlier times/ conquered lands.

It is a book which, with every narrative will make you think. Each object takes about 3 to 4 pages so it is a very easy read.
Considering that this was a radio series made me wonder how would the author have explained all this to an audience, who unlike the book reader would have no image in front of him.

Educational and unput-downable

This book is so amazingly succinct! It has information in nugget form disguised in short stories. Just beautiful. Makes me really want to visit the museum.
