  • Description

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction fantasy. This book is a part of the Hitchhiker’s Guide series of books and is about the Englishman Arthur Dent's adventurous travel across the Galaxy in the company of his friend Ford Perfect.

    Summary Of The Book

The book starts when Ford Perfect tells Arthur that he is actually an alien from the distant star, Betelgeuse, and that he writes for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He further cautions Arthur that the Earth is about to be destroyed by a cosmic construction team for making way for a motorway bypass for the galaxy. Together, they try to escape death using a Vogon ship.

The Vogons are generally unfriendly and they dislike hitchhikers in particular. Ford's cousin Zaphod Beeblebrox saves them when they are thrown out into space by the Vogons.

Zaphod and his girlfriend, an earthling named Trillian whom Arthur seems to know already, are on a mission to find the planet Magrathea. They have a stolen spaceship called the Heart of Gold, which runs on an improbability drive to help them in this mission. The speciality of this drive is that when a button is pressed, the most improbable thing happens.

The book describes how the four land on Magrathea. They find the most intelligent computer, which is capable of finding answers to every question in the Universe. The book describes the adventurous exploration on the planet Magrathea, and the startling and life-threatening incidents that the four of them face.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is full of thought provoking incidents narrated in comedic detail. This book was started as a BBC radio comedy in 1978. As a ‘trilogy’ of five books, the first book sold over 14 million copies. It was adapted as a TV series, a computer game, a feature film, and as a play.

Just the first book - better buy the ultimate guide

[Comment]: This is just the first book of the trilogy. You are better off buying the ultimate guide that is a compilation of all the 3 books of the trilogy + 2 more books.
[About the book]- Though this is a lovely read. I can hardly keep away from this book.
[Flipkart's performance]: Packaging is perfect and the delivery was in time, faster than the usual flipkart services.

    Collector's Edition

You would have come to know, about how cool this book is and the cult following it has, already. So thats why you are here. No need to tell you about the content.

But this 5 part edition of the trilogy is the best because it has a DIY cover. Which mean that the cover has no graphics but the book comes with stickers, which are very cool and definitely a collector's worth.
You can stick the stickers on the cover or just any where you like!

    Worth the extra buck!

    Awesome and Funny

Its probably the most funny book I have ever read. To combine humour with science fiction is a feet not easy but very well accomplished by Douglas Adams. The whole series is very funny.
If you are a fan of classics like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, maybe this is not a book for you. But this book is a classic in its own self. Its a very different writing style to classics and to popular fiction aswell, and yet it is a classic in its own self. On the surface it is an in your face kind of co...

A great read for those who have the "childish" side !!

I wish I was around when this book was first launched, because one can only realize after reading the whole book, what an effect it must have had on it generation !!

A witty, quick read filled with comic-fun, almost ridiculing the reader's logic if I may add !!. Its a pure joy to read, with an open un-constrained mind, I must add !!

Buy it, read it, and give it to the younger folks you know.

    Utterly hilarious

Douglas Adams writes in his own peculiar and lucid style. His selection of words, proses is superb. This one is for those who enjoy reading fantasies. His take on modern life thru various quotes is unparallel!

    Hilarious and very well written

Douglas Adams weaves a beautiful and fantastical journey of an unlucky and confused earthling along with a equally confused and unlucky space hitchhiker. The result is hilarious and an unimaginable spaceship, the president of the galaxy gone mad, a severely depressed emotional robot and a long lost love... a must read for anyone interested in sci fi and comedy novels!
