Book Reviews of Honor Defended
*Honor Defended
Review by Narayan Radhakrishnan
HONOR DUE was a devastatingly entertaining book. It narrated the story of the Major, an ex-Special Forces Veteran from the Vietnam War. Totally disenchanted with the way the defense of his country was being run, the Major retired from the life to lose himself in the Pacific Northwest rainforest. He plans no return to civilization but when he becomes a target of a covert operation, he has no option but to return to his old ways. What followed was action at its somber best, culminating in a finish that was simply fantabulous. It is to be noted that HONOR DUE won the Silver Medal for Fiction by the Military Writers Society of America in 2008.
At last the sequel has arrived: HONOR DEFENDED. One cold winter night (or rather the deadly calm before a storm), Major Westfall is awakened by a distress call from an old friend - another Viet Vet. Seems he needs help. Someone has burned down his sister's house on the beach along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, abducted her and left behind the beheaded body of her Marine Corps husband. Taking a sneak and peek around the area the Major comes upon signs that someone had come ashore on the late night high tide and, from a source in town, someone has also stolen a large amount of dynamite and explosives from a local quarry. How are these incidents connected?
Soon the Major unearths a deep rooted conspiracy involving a school janitor and an abandoned logging camp... a deadly conspiracy that might just affect thousands of American. How will the Major and his assorted team of warriors thwart another terrorist strike?
I was particularly enthralled by the “code of brotherhood” that subtly pervades this thriller - a feeling of "one for all and all for one" ...the spirit of true friendship.
I would like to see a screen version of HONOR DEFENDED - rather the series, with Clint Eastwood donning the Major’s BDUs. Who else better to portray the somber, dark, brooding, mysterious loner: a man with the aura of mysticism surrounding him.
The blurb has it that there is one more book in this series. If, Mr. Brown, you are reading this, how soon will I be able to read and relish HONOR REDEEMED?
Highly, highly recommended.
