In Horton Hears A Who, the readers are taken on an adventure with Horton as he tries his best to safeguard the residents of Whoville from his fellow mates in the jungle.

Summary Of The Book

Horton Hears A Who starts on the 15th of May, when Horton the elephant begins to splatter some water from a pool. He suddenly begins to hear some noise from a speck of dust, and finds out that it is a mini planet. The name of planet is Whoville and is home to the Who community.
The mayor of Whoville pleads with Horton to safeguard them from any danger. Horton, being very kind-hearted, willingly agrees to do so. He bases this good deed on the fact that a person is a person, even if they are too small for the eye to see or hear. For taking his stand, Horton is put in a cage by the other animals present in the jungle, as they wonder how he could place his trust in something he could barely see or hear.
Horton begins to warn the residents of Whoville that if the animals in the jungle hear them, they would be boiled in beezlenut oil. This makes the residents of Whoville come together and create a great deal of noise, however, they are only heard by the other animals, when Jojo, a tiny shirker joins them. This event backs up the key phrase throughout the book, which states that a person’s a person, regardless of their size. As the other animals in the jungle hear the sound of the Whos, they pledge to safeguard them.

Horton Hears A Who had also been adapted into a short animated movie by MGM Animation/ Visual Arts, being directed by Chuck Jones in the year 1970. In the year 2008, this book was adapted into a feature-length film by Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox.

About Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss was the pen name used by Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was a renowned author, cartoonist and poet, hailing from America.

Apart from this book, the author has also written a number of other books, which were focused mostly on children’s interests. Some of the books written by Dr. Seuss include And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, Bartholomew And The Oobleck, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas!

Dr. Seuss was born on the 2nd of March, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The author completed his education at Springfield Central High School, followed by Dartmouth College. Following that, he completed his doctoral degree from Lincoln College, Oxford, studying philosophy. He passed away on the 24th of September 1991, as a result of suffering from throat cancer. Four years after his death, the University Of California rechristened their library building to Geisel Library, in honor of the author and his wife’s contribution towards the library, and their desire to promote literacy. The 2nd of March, which is Seuss's birthday, has been declared as National Read Across America Day.
