Frequently Bought Together With This Computer
Got mine few days back. I had held my purchase decision in light of availability of Ivy Bridge Core i7 mobile processors. Currently, only Dell [Alienware] and HP are offering Ivy Bridge CPU based notebooks in Indian markets. And with a price tag of 60k, this is a steal not a deal.
Similar configuration from Alienware costs about 94000.00 + taxes.
Performance wise, I have nothing to crib about this system.
With the revised Intel Quick Sync, I could encode HD videos in minutes not hours.
Boot times are blazing fast. AIDA64 benchmarks put the 3610QM CPU ahead of most Sandy Bridge (desktop) processors. Large memory read and write throughput.
Intel HD 4000 is remarkable improvement from its predecessor 3000. Crisp image on external HDMI monitors for most everyday usage. Would not suffice for gaming needs. This is where nVIDIA 630M comes in to picture. Should be able to play most pre-2011 DX 10.1/DX 11 games. I am not in to gaming, hence can't present a definitive opinion. Based on benchmark results, the discrete GPU offers decent performance.
Can also be used to encode videos - thanks to CUDA.
All in all, I am immensely happy with this purchase.
You get a brand - HP, for this price with this configuration is the best. Will talk about all the features stepwise.
1. The processor is blazing fast, 3610QM quad-core with turbo boost upto 3.3ghz, can't get anymore for this price. Can handle upto 8 threads in parallel so it's really fast.
2. The chipset is HM77 chief river, which is a high performance chipset for support for RAID, talking in technical terms. In simple words, you have support for ultra speed hard disks called SSDs ( used in ultrabooks) and normal HDDs as well. So can opt for 128gb ssd and a 1tb 7200rpm hdd may be when you plan to upgrade
You get other laptops in this price range with hm76 chipset which is mid-range chipset of 7series without RAID support.
3. RAM although looks less 6gb, is sufficient presently and could be upgraded to 16gb and it's fast with 1600mhz speed.
4. What disappoints me is the GPU, GT 630M is the rekindled version of GT 540 and is not the Kepler version, so looks fine for now, but not sure of some upcoming games to be smooth. Would have been ideal if it would have been the Kepler version GT 640M, which you find in laptops of 70-80k range. Guess can't have everything at this cost.
5. The display, keyboard and trackpad experiences are above average. Again can't have everything at this price right. Backlit keyboard, HD+ (1900*780) display would have been ideal again. Still good for the price and very much manageable.
6. Other pluses which are not found in others, are - fingerprint reader, Kensington lock and cool master technology with beats audio.
7. Beats audio experience is good, gives real cinematic experience for movies and captivating for games.
8. Talking about hard disk, it is much less for present needs, 640gb at 5400rpm. But the plus is it can be upgraded to higher capacity with higher speeds along with an ssd in parallel. This feature is not found in other laptops coz they are hm76 chipsets.
Overall, with proper timely upgrades to ram and hard disk, this can be a great laptop for a longer period of time, ppl who are thinking to have this laptop for 6 years can have decent performance after 4 years and upto 6 years with proper upgradation.
The only competition to this laptop presently is the ASUS K55VM, which is a great laptop with only defaulters as HM76 chipset and RAM expandable upto 8gb max. But pluses are that it comes with 8gb RAM inbuilt and 1TB hdd for a much less and much competitive price of 54k which is 6k less than this one.
First of all
When you have function key disabled by default then it is very hard to work, you will always need insert button to work on VIM as "i" is not natural to press.
WiFi driver comes under proprietary drivers so quite bad to get started with if you have no internet as lan.
WiFi doesn't support 5GHz frequency which is very bad for me since 5GHz has better range coverage I am using Asus router with 900MB
Heat up in linux is very often. Even thermal shut down in some cases. (If you are running 64Bit)
HDD performance is quite bad, you will need to have rewrite check disable (Only if you are using ext4)
For windows user:
Just smooth as it should be.... Worst thing is their recovery system doesn't have configuration to auto fix boot
For that use command prompt and use bootrec.exe to do it manually.
I also noticed only right side, USB3 can boot my pendrives now what the hell is this I don't know. Checked with 3 USB
I am USB guy as I run linux on USBs to shift my work to home and office.
Just for sake of compatibility try 32Bit systems
64 opensuse and ubuntu both cried a river when I put it on this.
I have bought this laptop 1 day back, from Pune HP World would like to thank flipkart as I got the initial laptop info and pricing from it and was about to buy however needed more RAM. Price is competitive, I got it at around 61K with 8 GB RAM.
The laptop is good so far, and I am used to HP for long so did not try others.
So with 1 day experience below are pros and cons
-It is comparatively cheap compared to other brands with the same features and specs.
-3rd Generation i7, with ivy bridge chipset, 6 MB Cache, 2 GB dedicated graphics.
-Has been working fine with, 2 virtual machines (XP running under Vmware and Oracle VM virtual box -if wish to use virtual 64bit OS you have to enable virtulisation support in your BIOS)
-Nice illuminated hp logo (it glows when laptop is running)
-Battery life -- I ran for 3 Hours with virtual PC, wifi on, surfing net listening to music for about 2 hours-- in all this battery reached from 100 to 15%, so could be 30 minutes more it could last.. 3.5 Hrs is good for a 15.6 screen laptop (I have my company laptop i3 G42 14" screen which lasts around 1 hour).
--Sound quality is good, I can listen to it continuously for 2 Hrs :-).
--Not too many/extra button for wifi, sound etc(they are clubbed with existing keys) (for some this can be a con, however I prefer less clutter)
--I wished the OS to start quickly, it takes slightly more than a minute to boot.
--WIndows 7 Home premium doesn't have all the features (of course u need to shell out money--will look for professional in future)
I haven't played any memory intensive games till now.
I got this laptop from HP world Pune yesterday! And till now, this is a POWERHOUSE! And I mean it! I installed all the essentials and it blazed through every installation! It's absolutely amazing. The battery life is 6 hours for normal web surfing. Which comes down to 3 hours while gaming! Heating is not an issue at all! Under normal use you wont feel any heat or even the fan rotating! The screen isn't as big a dissapointment I expected it to be! I mean for the resolution being 1336x768. Pretty clear and accurate. Colours are wonderful as well!
I'll go step wise about everything. That's purely because I love the keyboard and typing on it!
1> processor: The processor is a blazing fast! Can handle anything I threw at it, though I am not sure about apps like photoshop and autoCAD. Installation of files was a matter of seconds.
2> graphic card: It's pretty good. It's the Kepler version if any one cares! I played left 4 dead o it just for the sake of it and got an avg of 60fps with all settings maxed out! But to be fair, this game isn't as demanding as something like crysis etc. also, the highest RES is 1336x768 so that also helps the FPS. I also hooked up the laptop to my ext Full HD(1080p) monitor and the FPS dropped to 30. That's a bit of a bummer I guess!
3> keyboard: AMAZING keyboard. Well spaced and keys have a soft touch to it! The surface under the keys is glossy though! And yes, there should have been an option to add a backlight keyboard as DELL has! That is a big let down!
4> screen: Not SO good but nothing you can't do with! It gets pretty bright so using outdoors shouldn't be a problem! You can always hook it up to a TV or a monitor if the RES is a problem for you!
5> RAM: That's pretty good though. No lag in anything at all! The 1600MHZ helps a lot trust me!
6> Touchpad: It's nice and big! The buttons have quite a tactile feel to it! Good job HP. Multi finger gesture works great as well! Though the zooming in is a little over sensitive. That can be adjusted though I guess!
7> fingerprint scanner: On of the best additions in the laptop. Apart from being extremely acurate, it also saves your passwords for facebook GMAIL etc so you just have to swype your finger!
8> BEATS AUDIO: one of the things that sets HP apart from everyone. Though I'm having problems with the audio in the earphones, But again I was messing with settings a lot! Still beats the hell out of any other ordinary sound system in a laptop. The speakers are kickass! Not as good as the JBL ones on the XPS 15 but can very well fill a room.
9> Hard disk drive: Here is where HP takes a beating! The hard disk is just 5400rpm. That is a big bottleneck for the speeds. It could have been even more faster if it had a 7200rpm HDD. Or the 32GB ssd and 500GB combo would have been the best. I personally am replacing the Hard disk by a 128gb ssd after a year!
I'll summarize the cons in total:
No backlit keyboard
Slower RPM HDD is a bottleneck in speeds
Lower resolution screen
Low res camera!
But considering the RAW POWER YOU GET WITH IT, these are just petty problems! all have an alternative solution because trust me, at this price, no one else gives away such an awesome laptop!
All in all, if you want a HARDCORE GAMING latptop, look else where, rest EVERYONE can use the laptop for absolutely any purpose. Even hardcore gamers can have a look. Only thing that the resolution would dissapoint you. I personally am satisfied with it though!
