3. Android Gingerbread version out of the box
4. Can play DivX/XviD movies
5. World class user interface - HTC Sense 2.1
6. Awesome battery life
7. Solid build and superb design
8. Front camera for Video calling
9. 1 GHz Scorpion processor, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset
10. 1.1 GN Rom and 768 MB Ram
Cons:
1. Super LCD Screen, Which is inferior compare to Galaxy S super amoled screen
2. 5 MP Camera (For the same price Nokia offering 12 MP N8)
3. Adreno 205 GPU is inferior than Galaxy S PowerVR SGX540 GPU (Run quadrent)
I selected Desire S over Galaxy S because of the professional look and pocketable size of Desire S. I ordered in Flipkart on 18.04.2011 and waiting for the arrival. Flipkart price Rs.23750/-(Social network DVD free)
I received my Desire S just now (21.04.2011 11.30 am). I ordered on 18.04.2011 night. They promptly delivered within 3 days. They packed in a very good manner. The unopened mobile box was covered with packaging material and put in to another packaging box. Then again covered with a flipkart plastic bag and sealed. Invoice was attached along with they provided the nearby HTC service centres address for my reference. The social network DVD original box set also came free. I am very much satisfied with Flipkart service. I appreciate their packing, prompt delivery and provision of service centre address. Without sweating I got the mobile for a good price at my house itself. Thanks Flipkart.
Guys, I think we must buy a phone based on our priorities of functionalities required. I am going to compare Desire S, Galaxy S, Incredible S, Xperia Neo, and big daddys like Galaxy S2, Sensation and Iphone 4. As per my experience, I have come across all of these. I'll give points to these all out of 100 on specific functionality/parts.
1) Display Quality: No one beats Iphone 4 when it comes to display quality. It's LED backlit and contrast is the best ever i've seen. I give it 97/100. Next comes Galaxy S2 and it deserves a classic 96/100 with Super AMOLED Plus display but gets beaten in pixel density and round shape figures have clearly visible broken curves. Also display of S2 is so bright and contrast is so much that it makes the display a bit unrealistic. Sensation has a decent pixel density and display is very realistic but it gets beaten in terms of contrast and watching movies and videos in dark is not a gr8 experience like Iphone 4 and Galaxy S2. It gets 95/100. My desire S has approximately same pixel density as Sensation and hence it gets 4th spot with 94/100. Galaxy S has a good display but not upto the mark as Desire S and same with Incredible S as it has lesser pixel density and both get 91/100. The newly coming Galaxy S Plus is a nice deal with Super AMOLED display and same price. Xperia Neo has a good pixel density with Bravia engine and it deserves 94/100.
2)Touch Sensitivity: Again Apple wins with a glorious touch sensitivity and Iphone4 gets 98/100. But this time next in the deal is HTC and it gets 97/100 and no doubt they deserve this spot as they gave birth to touch. Samsung has to do a lot in terms of touch and Galaxy S2 gets 94/100. Same with Sony, and Xperia Neo gets 90/100.
3)Sound Quality: No doubt Apple provides mind blowing sound quality and is at the top spot again. It gets 96/100. Also the Apple's earphone quality is fairly good and they get 88/100. 2nd spot winner is Sony this time with 95/100 and Neo's earphones get 90/100 with sony's boom sound quality touch. HTC gets 3rd spot with 93/100 and HTC has to do a lot in terms of Sound. But i found HTC's sound quality better than Nokia's XpressMusic phones. HTC's earphones get 82/100. Samsung comes at the last and gets 90/100 in sound quality and 82/100 in terms of earphones.
4)Build Quality: Again Apple daddy wins with 95/100. HTC 94/100. Samsung 92/100. Sony 91/100.
5)Looks: No doubt again that Iphones are the most elegant looking mobile device in the world with 97/100 and HTC gets 2nd spot with 96/100. Samsung gets 94/100 and Sony gets 90/100 with not so good looking curves :P.
6)UI: Apple wins Again with iOS4 and gets 97/100. HTS wins the 2nd spot with HTC sense UI and gets 96/100. Samsung 94/100. Sony 90/100.
7) Camera: Lets keep Desire S, Incredible S, Neo and Galaxy S for comparison as Big daddys are costly ;). No doubt Incredible S wins with 8MP camera in the same price range but if we compare Desire S and Galaxy S then HTC wins. I've compared the qualities and HTC's pictures are more clear and realistic. So we can say HTS's 5MP is better than Samusng's 5MP. Sony and HTC are almost similar.
8)Battery: Again Apple wins with 97/100. Samsung is at 2nd spot with 95/100. Sony at 3rd spot with 93/100 and HTC gets the last spot with 90/100. HTC has to do something in this area. Battery hardly lasts a day.
9)Charger: HTC is the best in this field. Data cable is used for charging purpose as well with a cute, small, easy to carry charger. You don't have to carry one more extra cable everywhere.
I think i have covered all the important points required before buying a phone. So if you plot a graph of all the data above :P then HTC Desire S is the best deal in 18-25K range. You get a very very good looking phone with gr8 build quality, realistic display with brilliant pixel density and contrast, handy with sufficient 3.7 inch display, Plays almost all types of video and audio files, decent sound quality, one of the best in touch sensitivity, skype video calling, 768 MB RAM and 1.1 GB ROM in proper tune with Gingerbread 2.3(Compared to 512 MB RAM in Galaxy S). Its been a month and I have downloaded and installed more than 60 applications and games and it runs everything. Never hanged. I directly copy 700MB sized DVR rip avi files or blue ray ripped mkv file and it plays them very very smoothly with many applications running in background. In short, you get everything in affordable price! Newly coming Galaxy S Plus is a gr8 alternative for this but you get only 512 MB RAM which may cause many apps not working properly but surely Galaxy S Plus will be having better display with Super AMOLED screen. If you want to spend above 25K then galaxy S2 beats everyone as apple doesnt provide many useful free apps as is the case with opensource android.
I have been using this device extensively for the last 7 days & here's my impression so far ....
a) Camera - Just superb!! Awesome quality pictures & the best thing is it takes photos instantly without any time-delay whatsoever. Also when I zoom in on objects in the photo it does not get grainy. I really love the camera plus the stock effects & options go beyond expectations.
b) Sound Quality - Supplied ear-phone's output quality is rocking but it's not in-ear (disappointed about that) and it's too big for ears. SRS works magic added to that there is superb EQ on the stock music player. Speaker output quality is good but not loud enough.
c) Battery Backup - You will need to charge every night. I game (30 mins), surf (30 mins), download & use apps (1 hour), watch videos (45 mins), listen to music (3 hours), Social netowrk (thorough-out the day = 3 hours) after that when I return home in the night around 9:30 I am left with 25-30% battery (not exaggerating). I thinks that's good enough for a 3.7" android phone with 400x800 resolution S-LCD display. I am sure it'll get better after 20-22 times of full charges. But I am satisfied!
d) Gaming experience - superb, I have been playing games which were not available for my former phone LG Optimus One P500 and I have never faced any lags ever.
e) Grip of Death - I use Wi-Fi a lot with the phone & never faced any problem & also no problem with dropped calls or network bar drops.
After a month long usage I might be able to find some cons for the phone, then I will definitely share. So far it's a rocker! I am glad I chose this over so many other devices.
As an owner of Desire s I have gone through lot of research before buying. here are some
1. Both have similar hardware specs except incredible s has higher configuration as 8mp cam with dual led flash, front 1.3 mp cam and a 4 inch panel and of course 4k costlier. Now it boils down to your choice.
Benefit of Incredible s :
1. Larger screen with better camera.
Benefit of Desire s :
1. Better build quality.
2. Newer OS and some new apps(only phone with Gingerbread).
3. Contrast is better that Incredible s as both are same resolution screen which indicates Desire s has more pixels per square unit.
4. Both have same battery 1450 which favors Desire s with excellent battery life since slightly smaller screen and camera along with more power saving options and updated software to minimize the power drain. U can follow reviews on battery life for both of them.
As a smartphone 3.2 to 3.7 inch screens are better in terms of overall handling. At this price range Desire s is a better option than Incredible s. Although people need larger screen and powerful camera can look for other options like Galaxy s, Incredible s, SE experia arc though have to sacrifice on a lot of benefits. But HTC provides excellent UI which is on par with IOS.
