In the ruins of the place known as North America- lies the nation of Panem - a shining capitol surounded by twelve outlying districts. The capitol is harsh and cruel- and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the age of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual hunger games- a fight to the death on live T.V.
About the Author
Suzanne Collins is a renowned children’s writer, American television writer, and novelist, whose most distinguished work is The Hunger Games trilogy.
Suzanne has authored The Underland Chronicles, Catching Fire, Mockingjay, Fire Proof, When Charlie McButton Lost Power, and When Charlie McButton Gained Power.
Collins’ writing, which was generally considered best suited for children, surprised the world when she wrote The Hunger Games. Though the books were written for young adults, they carry implicit meaning for adults. Her writing style is compact and edgy.
Born on August 10, 1962, in Connecticut, Suzanne Collins is a Roman Catholic. She spent her childhood in the eastern part of the United States. She attended high school at Alabama School of Fine Arts and took up a Theater Arts major and graduated with a Drama and Telecommunications double major from Indiana University. Starting off as a children’s television show writer, she won sundry awards for her work. Her work then shifted to novels for young adults in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, suspense, and action. Suzanne lives with her husband, two children and two cats in Connecticut.

It's actually my fault that I didn't do enough research on the book before ordering it. Had I done that, I would've known that despite its dark, Orwellian, Battle Royale-like plot, it's a young adult novel written for a target audience comprising Twilight-loving, Teen Choice Award-voting pre-teens yuppies. The end result is a contrived, pseudo-gritty novel with the potential of a 1984 but the writing style and substance of a Twilight or Princess Diaries.
But what it lacks in soul, it makes up with its sheer adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding action. Collins loves leaving her readers on tenterhooks at the end of almost every single chapter. So despite all its contrivances and silly romantic angles, The Hunger Games does manage to make for a surprisingly exciting read. And as much as I hate to admit it, I want to read the next two books as well.
This is a wonderful book written by Suzanne Collins. The feel is similar to the Harry Potter novels which infact makes it more interesting.
The characterization and plot is excellent. Also, the movie based on the same book is coming in 2012.
Plot (5 out of 5): the story just pulls you into a world where hope and strong will is very hard to nourish. it makes you bitter yet surprisingly you cannot wait to know what happens further.
Character development (5 out of 5): the story unfolds through the eyes of 16 years old girl who is trying to stay alive in a very hostile environment. you want to cry your eyes out to such unjust done by government so called "CAPITOL". i actually cried at some point i will not tell you when in the story but you will fall in love with the main protagonist for her strong will, bravery, kindness and caring nature.
Writing (4 out of 5): the way story unfolds, the characters are developed you will remain glued to the book till end.
Altogether (5 out of 5): an absolute delight treat from Suzzane collins. A must read book.
Firstly, the book is about a girl who fights for her life with similar opponents in a framed arena, referred as The Hunger Games, initiated by a tyrannical dictatorship in a city called "Capitol" as an act of forbidding the citizens to stir a rebellion.
Though the story was well written and adorned with some spices of excitement, I felt that there was nothing new compared to several other stories, with a similar genre, that have been in the market for ages. May be the usage of an advanced fictional technology in the book sounds new but I have seen the similar stuff, even better, in the movies like "Gamer" etc;.
The book could make a charming read for kids, due to adventures stuff, and may be for adults who are new to reading but not for seasoned readers. Having read this book, I undoubtedly refrained from buying the 2nd & 3rd parts in the series.
By the way, if someone liked this book, watch the movie, the adaptation of which is really great.
The hunger Games is one of the most exhilarate books i have ever read. It's bind you in the elusive dystopian world of panem which in the past is known as North America.
Full credit to suzanne collins, it's a real page turner and excellently written. There's never a dull moment in the book even though some events are predictable, but you won't have problem reading the guessing part because the fluency of her writing is inexplicable.
It's starts of with a simple hunting trip and mystery unravels itself from that point as if spider has started woven it's own web.The character's in the book are very less mainly explores the character's of protagonists. To start reading the book is like really embarking on a real adventure in the wild arena. This book has everything adventure,romance,science-fiction,psychological realism in the tense moments and what-not?.Even though it starts simply it ends with a very dramatic ending.
I can't wait to read the second part of the series......
