The Hunger Games (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.200

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a science fiction story, about an annual event between two districts that requires two participants to fight to the death in a televised battle.

Summary Of The Book

The Hunger Games is narrated by the protagonist of the story, Katniss Everdeen. The story unfolds in the district of Panem, during the post-apocalyptic period. The district has a time-honoured tradition called the Hunger games. Two participants (a girl and a boy) are chosen via a lottery system from each district, to fight until death, in an area filled with forests, lakes, and mountain ranges.

When her sister Primrose is chosen to participate in the game, Katniss adamantly volunteers to go in her place. The male competitor from District 12 is Peeta, the baker’s son. Both participants are taken to an area called the Capitol. The Capitol is a harsh and cruel place. They keep all the districts on edge by forcing them to send a girl and boy, between the ages of 12 to 18, to fight in the Hunger games. Once the contestants reach the Capitol, their coach Haymitch Abernathy, his assistant Effie, and their designer Cinna, work together to create a strategy for both players to enact in the battlefield. Katniss and Peeta have to behave like star-crossed lovers who couldn’t stand to inflict pain on each other. The goal is to create a memorable impression and gather extra sponsorship.

After weeks of preparation, Peeta and Katniss enter the Arena to fight. Here, it is important to remain alive, but Katniss can not bear the thought of killing tributes and becoming a murderer. How can the star-crossed lovers defy the Capitol and still stay alive? In the end, both have to fight to stay alive, but will the Capitol ever agree to two victors instead of one?

The publication of The Hunger Games has met with resounding success. In 2008, it was named as the “Best Books of the Year” by Publishers Weekly. The New York Times awarded it the “Notable Children’s Book of 2008”. In 2012, a movie based on the book was released, grossing over $152 million in the first week.

Contrived, silly and sophomoric - a real page turner.

It's actually my fault that I didn't do enough research on the book before ordering it. Had I done that, I would've known that despite its dark, Orwellian, Battle Royale-like plot, it's a young adult novel written for a target audience comprising Twilight-loving, Teen Choice Award-voting pre-teens yuppies. The end result is a contrived, pseudo-gritty novel with the potential of a 1984 but the writing style and substance of a Twilight or Princess Diaries.

But what it lacks in soul, it makes up with its sheer adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding action. Collins loves leaving her readers on ten...

But what it lacks in soul, it makes up with its sheer adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding action. Collins loves leaving her readers on tenterhooks at the end of almost every single chapter. So despite all its contrivances and silly romantic angles, The Hunger Games does manage to make for a surprisingly exciting read. And as much as I hate to admit it, I want to read the next two books as well.

Extraordinary book of an extraordinary girl.

Plot (5 out of 5): the story just pulls you into a world where hope and strong will is very hard to nourish. it makes you bitter yet surprisingly you cannot wait to know what happens further.

Character development (5 out of 5): the story unfolds through the eyes of 16 years old girl who is trying to stay alive in a very hostile environment. you want to cry your eyes out to such unjust done by government so called "CAPITOL". i actually cried at some point i will not tell you when in the story but you will fall in love with the main protagonist for her strong will, bravery, kindnes...

A typical adventure that has nothing great

Firstly, the book is about a girl who fights for her life with similar opponents in a framed arena, referred as The Hunger Games, initiated by a tyrannical dictatorship in a city called "Capitol" as an act of forbidding the citizens to stir a rebellion.

Though the story was well written and adorned with some spices of excitement, I felt that there was nothing new compared to several other stories, with a similar genre, that have been in the market for ages. May be the usage of an advanced fictional technology in the book sounds new but I have seen the similar stuff, even better,...

May be the usage of an advanced fictional technology in the book sounds new but I have seen the similar stuff, even better, in the movies like "Gamer" etc;.

The book could make a charming read for kids, due to adventures stuff, and may be for adults who are new to reading but not for seasoned readers. Having read this book, I undoubtedly refrained from buying the 2nd & 3rd parts in the series.
By the way, if someone liked this book, watch the movie, the adaptation of which is really great.

Excellent

The hunger Games is one of the most exhilarate books i have ever read. It's bind you in the elusive dystopian world of panem which in the past is known as North America.

Full credit to suzanne collins, it's a real page turner and excellently written. There's never a dull moment in the book even though some events are predictable, but you won't have problem reading the guessing part because the fluency of her writing is inexplicable.

It's starts of with a simple hunting trip and mystery unravels itself from that point as if spider has started woven it's own web.The character's in the book are...

It's starts of with a simple hunting trip and mystery unravels itself from that point as if spider has started woven it's own web.The character's in the book are very less mainly explores the character's of protagonists. To start reading the book is like really embarking on a real adventure in the wild arena. This book has everything adventure,romance,science-fiction,psychological realism in the tense moments and what-not?.Even though it starts simply it ends with a very dramatic ending.

I can't wait to read the second part of the series......

Unputdownable tale of woe and hope

The book opens on a bleak note, and it sets down the tone for the rest of the pages. And when you feel that there's absolutely no hope to clutch to, something miraculous happens.
The plot is designed to keep the readers hooked, and though not always unpredictable, it suffices to keep us enthralled.
The characterization is to the point, and although I find parallels between the characters of Peeta Mellark and Edward Cullen and Jacob Black and Gale Hawthorne, the similarity stops there. Well-etched and played out, it's easy to identify with them and see them humans stuck between the devil an...

Well-etched and played out, it's easy to identify with them and see them humans stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Somewhere before the last page, the lines between fact and fiction blur, and you're left wondering if Collins just has an imaginative mind or if art does imitate life at times.
Visually and emotionally evocative, Suzanne Collins has probably created one of the most impressive allegories of our times.

Disappointing...

Firstly, I should admit that I am reading the book after I have watched the movie. But this is not the first time I did this. It was the same case with first 4 parts of Harry Potter and DaVinci Code and in their case, it did not subside my interest in the book.

Having said that, the story to me...

Better than the movie

I read the book after watching the movie and still enjoyed this better as I could live through all the details which the movie left out. Can't wait to read the 2nd (again have already watched movie part-2). (View complete review)
